Octavia sounds like a bag of spanners

Featured Replies

richh - please let me know what they come up with. that would be excellent.

I started the car up this morning to go to work after it had been standing overnight on the driveway and guess what???????????

no noise at all this morning

I guess i will have to keep monitoring it til it goes in.

Guys, i had my car in for a service a few months ago. I told them about a rattle that sounded as if it were coming from the engine bay. They couldn't find it, however, later when it was up on the ramp that mechanic found that the metal clip that holds the middle of the exhaust pipe had snaped from the underside of the car. They said that they proved this was the cause of the noise as they had someone hold it when they started the car on the ramp. They told me i need to have it welded. When i get a chance i will get it done as the noise is driving me mad. Hope this helps, at least it might be another place to look.

Hi

They've said it needs a new cam belt tensioner. I'm not sure this'll fix it as surely that would make a noise when it's warm too  Anyway I'll let you know if it makes a difference

richh

thanks for getting back to me. when mine goes in next week i will see if they come up with the same thing.

Do you think it is liable to do any damage if i drive it til it goes in to the dealer??

Is your car still under warranty, Richard, and what is the year and mileage?

On Audi's with the same engine (1.8/1.8T) it is normally the camchain tensioner. Its not a wide spread problem but I see them from time to time.

Do you think i am ok to drive it until the dealer gets to see it??

could something catastrophic happen???

Hi

it's a 52 plate with 55k on the clock. It's a company car so not sure of the warranty situation as I don't see the bills. The parts are ordered - I'll let you know if it's cured when it's been in again

Richard

mine is a 53 plate with only 10k on the clock

should this sort of fault arise on a car so young???

Could be just the baffels in the 'cat' loose. I had a Passat a few years back that had that problem. Initially, once it warmed up, the rattle went away. After about a year, it did it all the time, but only at a certain rev range. Not long after that, the tail pipe rusted through, so a new exhaust was fitted and the rattle stopped. I saw (heard?) the problem again a year or so ago on a neighbours Golf, told them what happened to me and a new cat solved that one too.

I have this same intermittent horrible mechanical noise. It really does sound like a bag of spanners on some days. It have did it when I first got the car. It has been back to the dealers several time but they say it doesn't make a noise when it has been left with them. They suggested it could be the starter, but that has been changed and still no difference.

well mine stopped making the noise just before it wa due to go to the dealer so i cancelled, however it has started up again now and is booked in for a couple of weeks time. To me it seems worse on a cold damp morning, also sometimes it is not as bad as others. The other day i thought it may be something to do with the exhaust but it is hard to pinpoint the exact location of the noise.

No doubt when it goes in the noise will not happen.

Definately more likely to happen on a cold damp morning (or possibly just cold). I am convinced it is coming from the engine bay.

After having this for a year now, it has become less frequent, I don't know if that's a good or bad thing.

I never got it sorted because it never performed for the dealer, so gave up on trying to solve the problem, and my car has never actually let me down.

Right, now mine also does this.

Sounds like a rattly, squeaky loose belty kind of noise when the engine is loaded for the first couple of minutes after first thing starting on very cold or cold and damp mornings.

Dealer (Silbury Skoda, Cramlington, North East England) hasn't sorted it yet after two visits. I think they're ignoring it and hoping I'll go away.

Now if I'm to believe what I've read in this thread so far it could be:

Cambelt Tensioner - if this goes wrong, things could be very bad.

Water Pump - if this goes wrong, etc etc

Secondary Air Pump - they all do that, so no worries

Anything else I should point Silbury in the direction of when it next goes in?

This sounds like the exact same noise i had, and i fell out with skoda uk over ths noise.....

It IS the cambelt tentioner, what happens is the hydrlic ram ( in the tensioner ) seizes up and then there is no tension on the cam belt!!!!! The noise goes away after 30secs or a min, when the cambelt has warmed up and the belt has tighened up..... ( with heat )

I had 3 tensioners and 3 cambelts on my octy and even then i had to send it to a specalist to to the job properly,,, This is where i got really poor service from skoda and so i sold my RS....

Hope this helps....

Pete

P.S My rs had only done 25k when the noise started and if i hadn`t had the balls to take on skoda then my engine would have gone BANG.

But all the said was " Its supposed to make that noise sir " :thumbdwn:

Hi

I've had the cam chain tensioner replaced now. The other morning was quite wet and nasty, just the type of morning that it would have been rattling it's skull of before, but no noise :D Before it had the tensioner done it also made a mild resonating / rattling noise at 3k revs, warm or cold, (a bit like a cracked exhaust heat sheild) - that's gone too :)

Richard

Glad you got it sorted, i will suggest this to my dealer when it goes in next week. I have got several things for them to investigate but this is my priority.

Did they actually hear the noise themselves when you left the car with them???

I am fully expecting the noise not to happen for the dealer when i leave my car with them.

I had a noise on my old Octy RS when turning the key from cold. The noise had more of a plastic sounding vibration, and only lasted 2 - 3 seconds on fire-up. A very similar noise was noticed when closing the drivers door. It turned out to be the grille surround vibrating within the bonnet assembly. I adjusted the bonnet rests in the engine bay and it helped a bit, but even on the new Octy, the same noise is present (but not as noticable).

This is the problem that im having too. Its happens on cold start up but is totally random will happen like once every 2 weeks or so. Its happens when you turn the key and the engine is idling, sounds like the engine is struggling to turn over, lets say you have the interior light switched on it surges in time with the engine revs usually bounces between 350-750rpm.

Daytripper, get your battery and alternator tested. Sounds like one or the other, most likely battery. Mines slow to turnover sometimes, then again its left for weeks at a time between uses.

Finally took my car in to dealer today. The noise.... according to them is the secondary air pump. So they are going to replace it under warranty. We shall see if this fixes it.

Also got them to replace a front speaker that sounded as though it was knackered, sorted out the windows because the squeal when they are lowered and i got them to check the tracking again due to the car pulling to the left. They said the tracking was ok and there was no sign of anything wrong with the car causing it to go to the left. I pressed them on the fact that i had the tracking checked by an independent tyre fitting place only a couple of months after they had checked it last and it was found to be out. They suggested Speed bumps (which i do encounter every day) or kerbing or a pot hole. I pointed out that i had not had any problems with any of these things with previous cars and did not see why i should with this one, but they assured me again that my car is absoloutely ok.

They did offer me a free tracking check in a couple of months if i want but i think it is free to check it anyway isn't it????

Hopefully they will get the bag of spanner like noise sorted with the new secondary air pump if not it will be going back.
