Amundsen sat nav retrofit

Featured Replies

Hi there i currently have a vrs estate with the standard audio system fitted along with parking sensors, blutooth and phone prep. I now fancy getting the Amundsen sat nav. Is it possible to retrofit this to my vrs and have the phone and parking sensors still work. Also how much does the unit cost?

£500 ish but plenty of them on eBay, should work with your sensors, not sure about the maxi though, that may have needed factory fit, mines on the blink needs a new gps module in the antenna, but works well

I am sure you can retro fit an Amundsen and have your steering controlls and parking sensors working (if factory fitted).

My dealer told me it could not be done and so I did not attempt to fit the Amundsen.

I now know that the Columbus can be fitted and this is a much better unit and so I will eventually go for it.

I retro fitted an Amundsen+ to my vRS no problem at all. My car had rear parking sensors and bluetooth/phone prep already fitted and the Amundsen worked fine with it, nothing else needed. I only needed to use VCDS to get the sat nav working with the multidot thingy. Obviously you need to fit the GPS antenna somewhere as well. I put mine behind the glovebox to the side of the airbag and it picks up satellites fine.

I have not made up my mind just yet as the price of the unit alone is similar to a remap which I find far more appealing. Out of curiosity though, is it an easy installation which can be done privately without advanced knowledge of connections/electronics or you already some experiences with this stuff? Also, If there is no VCDS cable available, would it work without the maxidot or would not work at all?

thanks guys , i have not decided to do this yet as i might decide to go for an extended warranty as i plan to keep the vrs for 5 years and dont fancy running it for 2 years out of warranty.

I’ve next to no experience and managed it. Removing/replacing the existing radio is really easy and there is a guide here http://briskoda.net/forums/topic/208944-removing-swing-radio-mk2-fabia-vrs-tsi-guide/

GPS a little harder but easy to follow guide here although not exactly the same http://briskoda.net/forums/topic/158885-how-to-install-entertainmentnavigation-unit-in-fabia-ii/

The antenna I used was magnetic and I stuck it on a big metal beam type thing to the side of the airbag towards the centre of the car. Threaded the cable through a hole into the centre console and plugged into the Amundsen.

It will work without the maxidot but it’s much better with it. All directions and road names, distance to turn are displayed on the maxidot and I very rarely look at the map on the Amundsen when driving. It’s a two minute job with VCDS, have a look at the VCDS section and see if you can find someone local. Otherwise your local dealer or maybe an independent garage might be able to do it.
