Creaking seat!

I've got the usual creaking driver's seat problem on my SE and intend to grease the springs in the hope that it will be cured. My car has the storage compartment under the seat, but I can't see any obvious way to get access to the springs. I don't really want to remove the seat, so can anybody tell me if the storage compartment can be removed with the seat in place? Any advice would be greatly appreciated, many thanks.
