Rust prevention

Featured Replies

So this is my third felly and in my experience the main rust spots are the arches particularly the back, and the tailgate just above the plastic trim that crosses above the lights.

Any other normal rust spots?

So far I've done the usual touching up, (bit of krust and a touch up pen.) for little spotst, on the back arches I've stripped to the metal rust treated primed with zinc primer and re sprayed. However rust is starting to bubble through again. (about a year or two on).

Anyone got any top tips for beating rust on a felly or is it an inevitable death?!

its an inevitable end squire, it doesnt matter what you do you will never stop it rusting... the other places they always rust is on the top rail on the inner wings(under the wing panel) and there is always a spot on the drivers side just inside the engine bay just bewteen the suspension turret and the airbox right in the corner, ive seen a few with a rusted up front cross member too, worth spraying some wax in and around the place to protect it

Now you come to mention it I've had spots both on the top of the wings and where the airbox was. Although just lobbing a tonne of grease on it seems to have do the world of good. The poor man's waxoil!

anything that prevents air or moisture getting there is a good idea, dont use underseal though, if you decide to fix the rot properly in the future its an ****hole to get it off again

I wouldn't recommend Hammerite 'Straight To Rust' as it is awful - it looks terrible and it chips off.

Try treating it properly (ie cut it out and weld new stuff in - or go at it was a wire brush attachment and then kurust or whatever), then use zinc primer, then stone chip and then 2-pack paint on it.

I did this to a subframe a couple of year's ago and it's still holding out (everything was sprayed on):

Always remove rust first, it'll come back, it just does ... ! :(
