The prosecution is for the crime committed not the potential - like many member on here I have driven at over double the UK speed limit on roads that may be 2 lanes and yet somehow managed to live. Therefore clearly and as many know driving to the conditions is far more important than an often arbitrary number.

Firstly, thats only an indicated speed so will be way off you real speed (unless you have a VASCAR device) and secondly that is only because you are lucky! Unless you have been trained to do so and have a legitimate reason and authority to do so you are an idiot and should have your licence taken away for ever.

I feel there should be a tier system applied to the fines ie standard fine £100 for up to 10mph over the limit, £200 for 20mph over the limit and instant ban for over 30mph over the limit plus a minimum of £500 fine.

There already is an increase in fines for more serious cases when you go to court , and the magistrates court sentencing guidelines have a start point of "consider disqualification" for 30 over the limit.

I think there needs to be a distinction in the thread about what is legal and what is safe. Legally if you go faster than the number on a stick you are breaking the law and gambling with your licence/wallet. There are cases where it is quite possible to drive faster than that number and still remain safe, and there are also times where it is dangerous to even drive at half the posted speed limit.

If more people were able to judge a safe speed for themselves then we wouldn't need speed limits at all...

Nail on head. This is the biggest problem with this country regards to speed and condition. Easiest place to see this is on motorways. Loads don't have lane discipline
