foam vs gauze filter

Featured Replies

basically whats best for the octy vrs

i can get either an ITG foam filter or a k+n or other cotton gauze filter.... induction type

cheers

K&N or Green Cotton would be my choice.

There's drawbacks to both. If you get a gauze one you have to oil it every year and the oil can play havoc with the MAF, if you get a foam one the filtration isn't as good so you get more dirt getting into the engine.

Hmmm so gauze looks the best option....

K+n can be had for £35.... Guess ill just give it one light coat of oil

K&N comes ready oiled. I think over oiling could be the cause of some MAF failures. I've always put K&N panel filters on my VAG 1.8T's & never had a MAF oil up.

i had a k&n 57 on 1 of my RS turbos and it made my car slower on the rollers lol. i have used Simota twin cone gauze filters on all my cars for the last 5ish years. cannot fault them. :)

Any cone filter located in the engine bay is going to lose you power as it's drawing in hot air.

Located front bumper

Lost 5bhp on my old st with a pipercross fitted!

Always use k&n now or gauze filters

Paper? :dull:

Paper? :dull:

Stockings? :)

or are they just for fan belts? :(

only if you leave it in places to get heat soak. mines down the side of my battery with a cold air feed from the front bumper centre mesh.

I had a Revo stage 1 mkiv Golf 1.8T with a K&N cone fitted as yours with a heat shield, & it dyno'd 4bhp less than the standard airbox & filter!

The OEM one. It has been proven it filters better than aftermarket ones, and the performance difference on an engine like this would be marginal.

agreed, but... a decent cone and air feed will give a higher "g" reading from the maf, i.e more air going in = Power.

a 3" filtered pipe basicly from front of the car to the maf will give more air flow, than a pipe going into a standard box. There was a test on AudiSport.net a few years ago using the "g" readings from the maff to measure the air flow. 3rd gear at full chat on every test.. there was not much in it but a "ramed air" type cold feed works best. Trials were also carried out on the rollers by someone a while back getting same results.

just remember if you do this, to leave enough "free to air" filtration to avoid hydrolocking your engine if you go through a puddle. . Its like opening the slidy thing on the hoover pipe to lessen the suck! << i said suck

im only reiterating a test done on a forum by many members. There is lots of right and wrong ways, All i know is K&Ns are poop! (no offence to anyone running 1)
