scout diesel/petrol mpg?

Featured Replies

if i go for a used octavia scout with a budget of 12 grand, and do 12 to 15k per year, would the price premium of the diesel car over the petrol one be worth it?. Purely on running costs inc servicing etc?

I have a diesel Scout and it really isn't that good on fuel, late 30's early 40's at best.

The mileage cut-off point for the petrol vs. diesel argument has risen over the last few years as the cost of diesel engined cars and the fuel itself remains higher than their petrol equivalents.

If I was doing 12-15,000 miles/year and had a £12K budget I'd be going petrol.

£12K will only get you a high mileage 2007/2008 diesel, you should be able to get a newer/lower mileage petrol for the same price - but all Scouts are rare, petrol Scouts are even rarer! Good luck.

My diesel is now just short of the magic 100k.

It took nearly 40k miles before there was a step change in economy.

Hoofing it - 35-38mpg

Normal driving - 42-45mpg (leaning more towards 45 now more often than not)

55mph into the depths of the Borders - 52mpg (little overtaking and plenty cars)

All mpgs are according to trip which the pedants will tell you doesn't count....;-)

Hope this helps you figure it out. Either way the Scout is a belter!

I have an app for recording my petrol usage which works out the mpg so this should be accurate:

Since May 2010 I have covered 32k miles with a max fuel consumption of 52mpg a minimum of 36mpg and an overall average of 45mpg which is almost exactly by the book figures (2.0tdi pd) not bad for a decent size car with 4x4.

I would guess the petrol would knock around 10mpg off these figures so for anything under 15k miles a year you're probably better off with the petrol.
