Felicia Fan Not Working; tried the usual...

Featured Replies

Hi all

Got an issue with my wife's 1997 Felicia 1.6SLXi which I hope someone might be able to assist with. The first problem is that it's been losing coolant which appears to be coming from the radiator cap on the expansion bottle; I'm just about to try to get a new cap for that. However, the main issue is that the fan will not come on, causing overheating in traffic or when stationary. It's had a temp sensor and after shorting out the fan switch terminals and watching the fan run ok, I also replaced the fan switch but the fan still won't cut in.

Fuses are ok, temperature indications on the dash appear alright and the heater seems to be functioning fine.

Any more ideas from anyone would be appreciated...

Thanks

Paul

You can get an insert for the tank which deflects the incoming coolant away from the cap area. The fan will only work if the radiator switch is getting hot, if the thermostat or thermostat cover (this can get a hole in it so the thermostat pin has nothing to push against) has failed, you won't get any circulation through the radiator or around the fan switch.

Hi

Thanks for the reply...and for moving my post into the correct forum. Apologies, but I only realised after I'd posted that it was in the wrong place and wasn't sure if I could move it!

From memory I think it's had a new thermostat already but I'll check my paperwork. Is there a test to see if it's working and are there any other possibilities if it's not the thermostat?

Thanks

hi there i will try to help you on this as i now have Slxi conversion in my felicia

right does the fan kick in if you put the air con on

and the slxi felicias fans are different from the rest as this is on the engine loom and not on the car loom as the Slxi has air con

you need to look at the fuses and relays in the box by the battery as thats all the fan and aircon relays fuses

umaslxi

hi there reading your reply again my last post is wrong as a 97 does not have aircon i would get a new expansion tank lid and see if fan kicks in as all the car is doing is boiling like a kettle

It sounds like the thermostat housing problem to me, did you have the stat replaced OR the housing too? do both of the big hoses get hot to touch when the gauge is showing hot or just one of them?

It's been a while but here's an update. Replaced expansion tank cap for a brand new one. Coolant still coming out of the cap. Going to try and get another tank from a scrap dealer. Will let you know how this goes.

As an aside. The temp switch that was replaced had two pins, the new one has three. However there are only two wires. Can anyone please confirm which wires go to which terminals so that I can make sure this is wired up correctly?

Thanks all.

you replaced the switch willingly with a different type and want us to guess blindly the wiring?

they have codes, that's a start.

at least you could take a photo

You'd need to do some testing if you can't get any more info, get a multimeter and dip the switch into boiling water. Connect your two wires to the ones which go closed circuit when the switch is hot, and that are open when it's not hot. Should trigger somewhere in the 90 degree C range, so easy enough to test on a stove at home with boiling water.

Thanks djaychela, that helps. I'll check it after I replace the reservoir.

Just as a shot in the dark.......have you tried flushing the system through?

In the meantime you could always rig up a switch to start the fan manualy. That way at least you'll avoid any damage from over-heating.
