Columbus Sat Nav - V8?

Featured Replies

Hi, My Yeti was built yesterday....... Delivery mid/end March... I have the Columbus Sat Nav as an option. Will it come with V8 DVD? When did V8 appear? I would hate to find that the latest version comes out in April! I'm sure it will have 7 figure postcodes, and speed cameras (?)

Has anyone got a version 8 already?

You won't have speed cameras as VAG don't offer that as an option. You will have 7 Digit search.

You should have V8 as they have been out since Oct last year (which is roughly when they are released every year).

If you want speed cameras you will either have to make a disc with the speed camera poi's added. Or you can upgrade to 3984 firmware and load them from an SD Card using a program called POI Inspector.

If you haven't got V8 when you get the car tell the dealer you want it as that is what they should supply.

Thanks vRS Carl, I hope the speed camera bit won't be too necessary! My wife is usually the biggest deterrent to speeding!! My current built in Sat Nav (Peugeot 807), only knows 'road names' which can be a bit limiting.

The software with the latest maps are not loaded from the factory, but supplied at the dealer on a CD, so you can easily check the issue date and version. Clearly you should not accept anything less than the latest.

Firmware is loaded at the factory (i.e the Nav factory). Don't know how it works in Denmark but in the UK the only thing the Dealer will load is Maps during the PDI Check. They will not load firmware unless instructed to by Skoda and even then they are reluctant to do it.

This is something that puzzles me and that I never got a plain answer from the dealer about when I had a Columbus system in my previous Octy Scout. In my naivety I would presume that, once having purchased a Columbus system (at a not inconsiderable price), free upgrades (both of the system itself and of the maps) would be included and the dealer would notify you when they are available. Am I wrong?

Unfortunately yes. You have to pay for any map upgrades. Same as you do with TomTom's etc. If you look at the cost to VAG to licence the maps and postcode database from Navteq then you can see why they don't make them free. The firmwre they will only do if instructed by Skoda. Usually it will be as part of a warranty issue. Outside of warranty you would get charged labour for the update which would be an hour as it takes around 50mins to apply.

I wanted to add speed cameras to the POI so had to purchase the DVD from the dealer (€380,00}

Using http://pimp-my-nav.com/ it's possible download the POI data. Unfortunately you might also have to buy further software to create an iso copy of the dvd. also, greatest disappointment, is you can't update the maps using this.

V8 shows as version 2012-1 and the dealer advised there won't be another one until June/July.

The best place to look for info on this, which has been discussed at great length is in the Ice, Security & Insurance section on Briskoda. All the answers to your questions will be found there, including links to software that you can use and websites like pocketgpsworld.com who supply the best speed camera database in existance.
