Help! Winter Tyre Puncture - Swap To Summer Tyres?

Featured Replies

Hello all,

This morning I had a puncture in one of my winter tyres.

I am in debate with whether or not to replace the full set with summer tyres again, I would have been doing this anyway in a few months or buy a replacement winter tyre? Do you think the cold spell is over?

I have had recommendations for for summer tyres, mainly Uniroyal Rainsports 2 and Maxxis MAZ1 Victras (sharkrider recommended them, says they are fantastic).

If you said other tyre, please specify which one and why.

Any help would be much appreciated as I'm running a spare at the moment and what to swap it as soon as possible.

Many thanks,

Stuart.

It's a tad early but I would whack new summers on if I was in your situation. Bearing in mind that winters work better than summers at temps below 7 degrees. It's getting milder, so you will be fine i'm sure.

I am presuming the winter tyre is not repairable?

If not then I would replace just that tyre with a new winter.

Not sure the worst is over yet, but in any event, winters are good up to 7*C and best changed to summers when temps are regularly above this.

I'd replace it with another winter too then you've at least got a full set with similar wear for when you come to put them back on next winter.

The winter tyre cannot be repaired. Thanks for the replies so far.

Bearing in mind if I get a new winter tyre I have to pay twice for tyre fitment within the space of a few months.

I voted maxxis, but then I recommended them ;) they are not happy below 10 celcius though! and are best above 15 celcius..they are summers. its too warm at the moment for winters, but it could easily snow again in march..... I'm intendidng to change mine at the end of march for the WSM meet, but will be watching the weather forcast before hand!

Get a tyre, get round to Alan's on the A59 near the vets, he'll swap it for £8 - can't go wrong at that. He'll even get the tyre in for you if you let him know the make but you might be able to get it cheaper yourself.

I'm always wary of these sort of garages damaging the alloys, this is why I always get fitting done at Skoda.

You had experience there?

Just read the reviews on these:

http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/Tyre/Matador/MP-46-Hectorra-2.htm

Another Briskoda recommended tyre.

Could get a full set for not much more than £200!

Apparently a sub brand of Continental, at the price, I'm seriously considering these.

I'd considered this when I got winter tyres - the first time I asked a Swedish colleague what they do and was told that they just fit 4 and use a summer tyre as a spare, so I did that the first year. However I noticed how tyres were in short supply so the subsequent summer I made sure I was prepared with a winter spare as well. Currently I have a winter spare on a wheel and another spare off a wheel, to make sure I'm covered in the event of unrepairable punctures.

For our other car with all season tyres the situation is the same - a full set of 5 in/on the car and a spare tyre in the shed.

What the OP should do depends on where they live. Where I am, in the south and only half an hour west of Heathrow, I'd probably change to summer tyres. It feels like the cold weather is tailing off, but I'd also check the various forecasts to help me make a decision. If I lived or drove where there is still snow on the ground or where morning and evening temperatures are colder, I'd want to keep winter shod for a bit longer.

Edited to add: my experience with Vredestein Snowtrac winter tyres is that they aren't so good (still eminently usable) when the ambient rises to 9C or more. However the Vredestein all season tyres really are remarkably good all year round, and I'm considering changing to them instead of the winter tyres. The main reason for wavering is that there is a good amount of tread left on the winter tyres and that I wonder how much of the year I'd use the summer tyres, if at all.

Thanks for the advice.

Yes, he fit my winters, onto some old alloys admittedly but, I've seen his work on neighbours' cars, top bloke. I now buy all my tyres on line and go to him for fitting. He's a darned good mechanic too - one of the old school

Uniroyal Rain Sport 2 Awesome in the Dry, even better in the wet

I had the same problem last year.

I punctured one of my winters, or rather put a big slit in the side rendering it useless.

I fitted my summer tyres early February. I could not find a replacement winter tyre of the same type.

This winter I bought 2 new winter tyres and now have a full size spare winter tyre in the boot.

Too close to the sidewall?

Stick summers on and replace the winter tyre in August when they'll be cheaper and you'll have a set for next winter.

Voted Maxxis. I've them all round and found them good value. Mine worked fine down to -17C last winter.

Will do mate :)

Too close to the sidewall?

Yep, about half an inch to an inch from the sidewall, shame really.

That's what I plan on doing - I will be buying the winter tyre mid summer when the prices are down. Thanks for the vote on the Maxxis, already gone with the Metador tyres, will see how they get on :)

Swap to summers a little early, then sort out the winters.
