Featured Replies

hi all im in the process of buying a 57 plate octavia vas estate it has everything i want apart from bluetooth and xenon headlights. are any of these available to retro fit them as i want to keep the car oem other than fitting a hid kit and aftermarket bluetooth.

forgot to mention its got the satnav stereo built in can bluetooth be added to that?

I think adding bluetooth isn't too big a deal, I think I've read figures of around £300 for the interface to the factory head unit. I would think that Xenon headlights would be possible, but since they must be self levelling and have a washer system to be legal, I would guess you're looking at a lot of work to retro fit.

If you must have the xenon's, it might be better to wait for another car to come along!

Mmmmm seems to be no hard and fast answer to the Xenon headlights.... I have H/L washers on my 58 elegance TSi but a headlamp levelling switch inside... so as the song go..."does I do or does I don`t have Xenons?" they are very bright lights especially at full beam

All elegance models come with headlamp washers as standard, irrespective of xenon headlamps.

If there is a headlight beam level switch in the car, they are halogens. Also, when the engine starts the xenons do a self levelling check, they drop right down and rise to their normal level, you can't miss it.

To retrofit xenons would be a pain, you need to fit suspension level sensors to a front and rear wishbone and replace the entire headlamp unit as well. There may be additional controllers to replace to integrate the self levelling system.

Personally I would wait for one with factory xenons to come up, there come up quite often.

Are xenons that big of a deal to people , standard halogens work just fine :)

They weren't that big a deal to me, until I ran a car with them. Now I wouldn't be without them.

Plenty of pre-FL vRS's out there with factory fit xenon's, just look for the headlight washers...

dont think that car has the dimming mirror, does it not come as a pac with the auto lights, wipers.

Can these not be just fitted to standard lamps as in a HID kit? Iv fitted them in lots of other cars!

From what I understand the only difference between Halogen units and HID units is the adjustment motor. The halogen one has 3 wires, the HID 4. The extra wire is so that the controller knows where the light is so it knows how/where to adjust it. (Hence "the HID dance"......"where are we?" dance "ah, there we are!"

Given that there are two lightswitch looms (with/without autolights) and that's only 30cm (give or take), it is not beyond the realms of possibility that the headlight loom would need to be replaced too, to accomodate 4th wire.

There is a huge question of legality, which has been discussed deeply. (Centering around approval marks missing from retro-fit kits.)

There's also a question over safety too. Retro-fit in projectors is not so bad (so the octavia's are ok), but in reflectors they'll dazzle everyone in front of you, and not really put any light on the road.

In Ireland hids are legal ! I wouldn't be too worried about auto adjuster s ether.

in the fl octavias with AFL Xenons - there r additional sensors to enable it calculate the levelling required.

the autolevelling is governed by sensors in the headlamp unit + behind the climatronic unit.

some cars (makes) have the 2nd sensor on the rear wheel axle.

i'm not sure what the setup is on the pre-fl octavias.

here is pic of the afl xenon sensor in mine (found while doing my bluetooth install):-

Pre FL Octavias have both front and rear suspension sensors. The data is easily read via VCDS.

I'm not sure if the headlight casing is generic as there is a ballast/ignitor pack that sits in the rear of the xenon unit.

And obviously something has to interpret the suspension data and tell the lamps where to sit in terms of levelling. Not sure where that is, no doubt stuffed behind the dash somewhere.

The extra wire makes sense, obviously there has to be positional feedback from the headlight to the levelling controller.

Bottom line, wait for a car with factory fit xenons.

It has been discussed at length before and legalities aside retrofit xenon's can be done very easily and will not be a reason to fail an MOT given the current wording of the test requirements.

In my experience the headlight casing is generic as there is plenty of space within a halogen casing for a ballast and the clear rear cover appears to have the appropriate mounting position for a ballast. Also, again from experience, the beam cut off and alignment with a retrofit HID appears to be exactly the same as for a halogen bulb.

The cost of OE xenons is way too high and prohibitive and have much more to go wrong. Retrofit kits do the same job at a much lower cost so why hold out for an OE version?

this is the car just hope its got the dimming mirror as thats something i also want lol http://www.ebay.co.u...#ht_1556wt_1219

That's expensive.

I paid only a few hundred quid more for my 57 plate diesel hatch with 10,000 miles less late last year.

OK, it has the Columbus and leather (non standard leather by the way, I've never seen red piping like that) but mine has xenon's, cruise, auto wipers, dimming mirror, curtain airbags, rear parking sensors and anti-whiplash headrestraints.

Make sure you bargain hard to get at least a grand off...

Sorry to say this but I really don't like those seats. They are far too shiny and look like plastic/faux leather. My personal opinion of course

It is lacking stuff that is hard/impossible to retrofit like the auto wipers, auto dim mirror and the xenons of course.

The sat nav (MFD2) looks like the real deal as it has the correct roof antenna and maxidot which has to come with a factory sat nav.

Also, it doesn't look like the seats are heated. The climatronic unit doesn't have the seat heater controls next to the temp readouts.

And it has the 17" wheels, I thought the upgrade pack at that time was the jumbo box, climatronic and 18" alloys? It certainly was on SWMBOs '07 plate vRS.

Although the pack at the time was Jumbo-Box, Climatronic, Rear electric Windows and 18" wheels there was nothing to stop you ordering any of those upgrades individualy.

I've got no idea on cost at the time, but I'm guesing that wanting any more than 2 of those upgrades and the pack made more sense. It was around the 57 time that the pack became standard, so I'm assuming this one was before the pack was standard.

I think it was offered as a free upgrade at the time we ordered our vRS which was about April 2007 for delivery in July. I forgot about the rear leccy windows - which are also fitted to that vRS.

the car does book at £8600 as my father in law is in the trade and i had him to check. i may look around as i really want xenons and haven't really got time to mess around in putting a hid kit in. the leather doesn't look that shiny in real life but your right its not heated either. its a really nice car in the flesh but i think i could probably get a better car for the same money elsewhere but not found one yet!!! if anyone could point some in my direction i would be grateful  i live near crewe cheshire so don't want to travel a great distance from that area but who knows if car is right i maybe tempted!!

You can get a retrofit kit for the headlamp levellers from kufatec - about £300 and it includes the front and rear axle sensors, control unit and loom. You then need 2 Xenon head lamp units and an adapter for the headlamp units. All in it will cost you about £550-£600 in parts - there are pre-FL Xenon headlamp units on ebay for about £100 each. Then a good few hours to fit and code all the bits. Seems a very expensive way of doing it if you ask me.

What they book for is one thing, what they are selling for is another.

There are loads of 4 year old petrol vRS's around with low mileage on eBay and Autotrader so you shouldn't be afraid of going in hard.

Here is one that is the same age, similar mileage and has factory fit xenon headlights, Maxidot and rear parking sensors.

It's not an estate but you get the rear spoiler instead! The Columbus sat nav is much easier to retrofit than xenon's.
