Niggly faults - do you have them?

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I have a 2006 Octavia vRS with 40k miles which I've owned approximately 9 months. There are several things with this car that irritate me...

1) Poor sound proofing - It sounds like I've got a window open, furthermore I've had to wedge a small folded piece of paper between the glass and rubber seal on the nearside rear window. I find that if I move the windows up (when they're actually shut) it helps cut the noise down a little.

2) Poor idle - It's not very smooth at all, but I'm hoping a new coil pack fitted free of charge by Skoda due to a recall will solve this - fingers crossed.

3) Poor electrics - Example: Interior lights flicker. Headlights dim noticeably when closing the window.

4) Dodgy sound system - I don't know what my head unit is called, it's not a Columbus or Bolero, but it will sometimes fail to play CDs. Sometimes takes ages to play a track when you skip through, can sometimes stop playing the CD altogether.

5) Returns same MPG as my previous car on the same journey (1998 BMW E36 M3 Evo 3.2)

6) Engine rocks when changing gear or with the slightest amount of throttle. It's not excessive but very annoying. Getting a price to have the engine/gearbox mounts changed.

7) Rear tyres wear down on inside edge and cause excessive noise making me think that a wheel bearing was on it's way out. Skoda want £185 just to look at it - no thanks.

8) Loud shock absorbers - when going over large speed bumps you can clearly hear them - is this normal? I've not noticed it on any car I've owned before.

9) Drivers door speaker vibrates with the bass. Door also makes a funny 'boing' sound when it's being shut.

What have you had and what have you done to fix them?

Bearing in mind that mines a diesel I have had none of the above items.

Most of those are common problems with lots of threads on here with solutions.

Mine is an 07 with 56k

1) It is a bit noisy but not as bad as yours

2)Nope

3)Nope

4)Stereo had a bit of a weird turn about 2 months ago but is fine now

5)Can't comment but last manual calculation got 37.5mpg after a few weeks of admittedly careful driving

6)Nope

7)It does seem to wear out the inner edge but by the time it's a problem they need changed anyway

8)Nope but not sure I'd recognise that sound

9)Yes they're not the best speakers.

I've a couple intermittent rattles (which have gone for now) and the cruise control needed to have the contacts cleaned but other than that in nearly 5 years the car has been faultless. I'd change now if I could afford to but that more of an itchy feet thing and tbh and it'll be hard to go back to something with <200hp.

I have an 06 too.

1) Noticed, but not too bad. I can live with it

2) not the smoothest but acceptable

3) no problems

4) speakers are poor. Fixtures/fittings are poor, resulting in vibrations.

5) avg. 32-35 mpg depending on driving style. Sub 25 if I have heavy right foot.

6) rocks as normal, not excessive, but you do notice it

7) 4 wheel alignment will sort it, but you will need new tyres as well to stop the noise.

8) not noticed

9) as per point 4. Rear offside is worst, but no 'boings' for me.

Got a 56 Reg Petrol VRS 52K

1) Yes mine is from drivers window/ frame especially over 90 mph (on private road /track of course)

2) No problems.

3) MFD display sometimes won't change from stalk.

4) No problems with my Stream CD/ multiCD or MP3. Aerial amplifier is dodgy needs replacing.

5) 32 - 38 mpg consistently.

6) No problems.

7) No Problems.

8) No problems.

9) No problems.

I've just changed all coil pack after two gave up and not under recall ! Otherwise no problems but then I do all my own servicing

every 6K miles.

I've just booked it in for the coil pack and they are adjusted the headlights for me as they are too low even on the highest setting for free! Bit of a surprise.

I get about 25MPG on the way to work, which is just 7 miles but I suppose that could be because the engine is cold for half the journey.
