Oil leaks, 1.4 8v..

Featured Replies

Was looking at the Missus 102k 1.4 at the weekend, as it's "marking it's territory" so to speak, and it seems to have a pretty well saturated undertray, oil on a large pipe that runs up past the filter (but only on one section as if it's running offf the filter!), oil on the mountings by the gearbox, and oil under the drivers side/pulley side of the engine (this one you can see dripping when it runs).

What are the known weakpoints/normal behaviour regarding oil leaks on the 1.4MPi? I'm guessing the "Pulley side" leak is probably the crank seal/sump seal gone tits-up, but where else?

How much of a tit would it be to replace the crank seal? We're going to get the timing chain done anyway, and I know that's a "drop sump" job as it stands...would it be easy enough to replace it at the same time?

Still trying to track down the rattle, which has resurfaced..argh..apart from that and the leak, it's a lovely little motor!

Oh yes..steering rack gaiters...PS one is kinked to heck (passed the MOT fine?), and showing signs of splitting...expensive fix, or straightforward?

Cheers all

If there is oil on the filter itself give it a good hard tightening by hand. One common leakspot I believe is the oil seal on the cam shaft position sensor at the front of the engine.

I think you'll find most of the leak is gone if the timing chain is replaced as you replace the seal/gasket on a few things.

Aye, I was hoping that'd be the case! Given that the garage have never done one before and quoted me £140 to do the job, I'm VERY tempted to buy the timing chain/gasket/seal kit from Joriley and hand it over with the car, so that they have all parts to hand and know what needs fitting (and run through it with them). Might leave the haynes on the seat as well, heh.

I see the rack gaiter looks easy enough from the book, so I'm not overly alarmed there.
