Fabia recall - March 2012

Featured Replies

Skoda Turkey recalls TSIs in batches. No call for me yet, but I've booked for a check-up on Thursday, the service station of main distributor of Skoda will check the car for all service recalls :)

Lot of updates:

Ecu updated

service action 24W6 Turbo shimmed

service action 24V9 Turbo Software

service action 15D9 Timing chain change

service action 37G8 Gearbox update

Timing chain is changing right now (I've left the car at the dealer today)

Convenience control unit changed (remote key fob was not closing the windows sometime)

All this job was done under warranty. Tomorrow I'll pick up the car and see :)

  • I thought seboni had a Golf? Doesn't the Golf forum want him?

  • Back on topic then... Took it down to the dealer to get it checked out and it turns out that this 'gasket' was the turbo shim fix which, happily, has also fixed the niggle with it being slow to pick

  • Yes and here is the pic, you will notice the new shiny distance ring

Summary after updates:

Silent cold start

Smooth engine run

More responsive 1st gear and R

No change in the turbo lag

No change on the consumption (maybe early to say)

At 9 of April i perfomed the 2 years or 30.000Km Service (26.500 actually) and also the car was in the 24W6 service note.

So after ECU update, turbo shimming and turbo parameters adaptation or set up or reset or what ever and after 1.200Km of motoring (27.700Km now) I can say that:

  1. The car is very smooth now
  2. No cold start jerky idling
  3. No 3.800rpm limiter when idling
  4. Turbo mode still available at 1.700rpm but no more turbo feeling, the car is very civilized now.
  5. Due to the civilization car acts like it has lost its power at low revs.
  6. Unfortunatelly for me and because of travelling at 2.700rpm or ca. 120Km/h #5 means that I have to drop a gear in order to overtake when in 5th gear and 80Km. That was never happened before the ECU update.
  7. Fuel consumption seems to be the same most of the time or marginal higher (0.3lt/100km)

I think the application of an ECU update to a group of cars having the same engine affects them in a very different way since all these cars are equipped with different gear boxes. The same set of instructions is not executed the same by a DSG 7, a 6 gear manual gear box and a 5 gear manual gear box. The last one is the longest one, and with the new set of instructions makes the car heavy and lazy. This is why computers having the same CPU but different memory modules, hard drives and video processors, acts differently under the same operating system.

I replaced the original H4 bulbs with a set of H4 Osram Nightbrakers. Great improvement.

Hi.

Do you know when your car was manufactured? My dealer in sweden isn't that willing to give me information about what bulletins that affects my car.

Mine is built late february 2011. Got it in my hands 31th March 2011.

1.2TSI 105 DSG7 Fabia Combi

Any help would be appreciated!

cheers

You might have service action 37G8 Gearbox software update (makes more responsive 1st gear and R).

For turbo, it have to be tested over software, some values are critical for shimming or not ;)

Dear Fredrik I am sorry but I don't know when my car was produced. I think it is about Summertime of 2010 cause I got it at 1st of July 2010 and on the VIN decoder reports it as 2011 model, also I can tell you that the last six (6) digits of the VIN refers to the production number.

As for the ECU Update, you will know if your car needs it only when the car will be plugged into dealer's VAS diagnostic system, which is online connected to the factory.

As for the service notes, or campaign or recall or what ever they call it, you may ask to another dealer. You just have to provide your VIN to pass it in their online data base and then if your car has to follow some service note, e.g. 24W6 Turbo Shimming, a message will pop up at their monitor, If nothing appears, then your car needs nothing to be done.

Best regards, Stratos

Very interesting thread.

My Yeti is going in for the recall work (turbo shim) this coming Wednesday. I am wondering what improvement am I expecting.

At the moment, when I accelerate from low rpm or from stand still when cold, the engine makes a grinding/coin jiggering noise - sounds like bags of spanners. Is this the rattle from the turbo or something more serious (such as the timing chain)?

Thanks!

Ok contacted my dealer in Mansfield and they confirmed my car is part of the recall. Apparently you should get a letter but they are doing them in batches and had not got around to me yet.

Interestingly, as someone has already posted on here, that it cures the delay in pickup when coming on and off the throttle when slowing down for roundabout etc. So what we thought was a DSG problem turns out to be turbo lag?

Also asked about the DSG update but did not know anything about that, so told him I'd been on Briskoda and had the TPI number for this so they said bring it with me and they will try and do this at the same time. I am suffering with some fierce clutch take offs that make me look like a learner driver sometimes which I hope will be sorted with this update + I've had some kangarooing which feels like the box has selected 5th instead of 3rd.

What are my chances of getting this sorted in one visit????

Update: Had turbo shim mod done on Friday. Nothing showing on computer for my car for DSG update but dealer felt that ecu update might alter some parameters that effect the gear box so only got the turbo shim update done.

However, very pleased with the results....no throttle delay when coming off and on the gas at junctions, roundabouts etc., behaves just like a normal auto now. The whole drivetrain seems a lot smoother with less clunky gear changes and no fierce take offs when starting off.

There is a trade off though as that diesel like low down grunt has been reduced but really that makes it much easier to modulate the throttle at low speeds. Still plently of pull low down but is starts happening a bit higher up the rev range but is more progressive. Early indicatons seem to show that its a bit more economical as well but it needs a longer test to prove this benefit.

Overall very satisfied as I was losing a bit of faith with this engine/gearbox combination. But only time will tell?

  • 2 weeks later...

Due to a turbo failure my Octy 1.4 is having this shim and ecu update, I will update with results.

Have to see if the DSG update is widely available at service or on request for hesitation etc.

Wife had a call today form the dealer asking her to take in the Fabia 1.2TSI 85 for the shim fit (week 34, 2010 build). Had no problems to speak of with the engine performance wise other than the odd lumpy idling and one occasion of a rough running start; sounded if a cylinder wasn't firing.

Other than that and more a mechanical thing, is what I assume to be timing chain related buzz on start in cold weather.

So I hope the shim doesn't mess her up; she's perfect as she is :wonder:

I wrote it at TSI rough running thread so I am copying it here too.

I made a complaint at my dealer after ECU update due to 24W6 directive (turbo shimming) that the car was lazy. The same complaint did another customer of his (I don't know the other owner). Then about 15 days after my complaint he called me back and he told me that he contacted the manufacturer and they responded that the car will return to its previous state (not sooo smooth turbo mode at ~1.700rpm) after 800 to 1000Km period. Plus that consumption may be arised up to 1.5lt / 100Km during this "adaptation" period and after will drop down to pre update and even lower figures.

Well I have nearly 1.700Km driven since then and YES after c.a. 1.000Km my car is back again up to +90% (turbo is not so smooth any more) and my consumption is very slightly lower now that the pre update period. Of course there wasn't a higher fuel consumption at that 1.000Km period except some times a +0.3 lt / 100Km.

You can read my report at post #53 . By the time I wrote it the car was starting to get nippy again but I thought that it was me who was fully adapted to new state of the car, then two days later dealer called me back. That was a great relief cause I considered I was going slightly mad.

Well had the shim fit done and although only had change of a couple of short drives since the recall, all appears positive. Not detected as yet any lumpy idling and that very slight flat spot on first applying the pedal has disappeared.

Had the car back to the dealer today, as now after a month both my good lady and I agree it's not running right. At slow speed the engine 'thumps' when you apply the accelerator and when accelerating from about 50mph it feels like you have the brakes on. Dealer cannot find fault and suggests it how it is after the mod. Not happy with that response and will be speaking to them again tomorrow.

Know the answer will be no but we want the mod removed as it's not suiting our Fabia at all :S

I had this done about 8 weeks ago. Went back to dealer (for something else!!) and asked about possibility of having software update backed out cos the car was less 'sprightly'. Was told would affect warranty cos, although not an 'official recall', VAG considered it to be a necessary update.

@ The Plumber and BishoptonMy dealer called back that time and told me that car will come to its original state after 800 to 1.500 km since the shimming and update. Indeed, after 1.300Km suddenly car became nippy again and when in "turbo mode" at 1.700 rpm it gives a nice pull when throttle down. It is back to its original state at 90%. Sometimes when in easy cruising while revs are low and in high gear, when I push down the throttle engine does not like it and makes a ungly sound. This is my lost 10% of joy.Consumption remained the same as before shimming and updating.

Hi guys.

Had my car at the workshop for 30000km service (long life) went in at 29920km)). It cost me 3500 swedish kronor (about 300 pounds)

My car had the thurbo shim fix and update of FW, they didn`t do anything about the chainrattling at cold start, they didn`t fix the rattling from the right hand rear door, they didn`t fix the knocking from vent =(

The doors and the knocking from ventilation i can manage by my self. But the chain rattle on the other hand I can`t do by my self. Does anybody know what can happen if this doesn`t get fixed?

My car had problems with hesitation when pulling away after lowering the speed. This problem is solved, it feels like they changed the pedal to throttle ratio, it`s much more insensitive now. This is a good thing cause now it`s easier for my wife to make "delicate" maneuvers when parking, driving and in fact all the time =)

It doesnt feel as "punshy" anymore as others have said, but it doesnt lack power, it`s just more linear now and everything is smoother. Consupmtion is still the same mixed (44,3mpg US, 53mpg UK), country roads (49mpg US 58,8mpg UK) and with a 1000kg trailer about (23mpg US, 27,7mpg UK =) (blaming wind resistance) (consumption measured at pump = volume / distance)

One last thing, haven`t used a drop of oil since new. I changed oil and filters by my self at 16000km

Just wanted to give you guys a update!

Ours is still running like a bag of spanners after the update, despite going way past what Skoda UK state is the acceptable post mod running in period/mileage. Was intending keeping it past the 3 year warranty period but now that's unlikely.
