replacing front subframe with lower arms - how difficult is it?

Featured Replies

My 4x4 subframe bushes are shot and one of the last remaining clunks. I was considering upgrading to the TT two piece ones but at £120+ I put it out of my mind and was just going to get them replaced next time it goes in for something else. However I have managed to get hold of the following http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/120866586659?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649 for the very modest price as shown :D I love Ebay :D

Question now is, how easy is it to swap out the subframe and arms at the same time, using either axlestands and wheels off OR wheels on with a set of ramps? would I be better getting garage to fit?

Does he realise you've taken his pants down and spanked his arse for that price

depends how capable you are Karl, i did mine, and with the right tools, and a good jack to drop the frame with, you can do it without much grief.

Airtools help with the subframe bolts, balljoint splitters (not the fork type so as not to damage your balljoint rubbers if you are reusing them) the time is in swapping bits over, and replacing bushes etc. Might be worth polybushing your dogbone if you havent already (think you probably have) and doing the poly superpro rack bush too. I would fit superpro castor bushes too to the cast arms, its a winning mod!

I would also take the opportunity to strip/clean replace all balljoints and tie rod ends too alongside.

yes meant to say thats a very good price, i remember someone on here paid something like 175 an arm, so considering you have the subframe, both arms and the lower brace you got a right winner!

great price, even got a s3 lower brace there i see!

I have to say you are one lucky guy to win at that price. Hat off to you buddy.

Replacing subframe is quite easy I have done in on axle stands and causes no issues. Did a DIY guide somewhere on here. I would normally say to swap lower arms only but as your subframe bushes need replacing you have to get the subframe low enough to get the VRS one piece units out therefore prepping a spare Subframe is better option. I nearly bought TT ones the other day then found out price for the 2 piece units and neally died. However those bushes are the last thing i need to change and currently I too have a very annoying clunck I can not get to the bottom of and assume it could be these.

I would say go for it. 4 hours job

yup, the ideal scenario is prep a new complete 2nd subframe, the literally take off yours in one piece (give or take) then replace with the new spangly setup

lol, the 2 piece ones are well expensive Mark! i had them in the tt frame i bought luckily, anyway the bushes in general are a pain to do, far easier to use the new subframe with the existing bushes if they are good!

thats the beauty of it. all the bushes, arms and subframe are good :D so for £40 I have scored two arms with solid bushes already in, lower brace AND the TT style two piece subframe bushes. The Bolts are about £12.

So guessing It would be a case of remove steering rack bolts, cable tie it to support it. Then seperate old ball joints, remove drop link bolts, remove ARB bolts and brackets then drop the subframe. Offer up the new one (I may even give it a coat of paint first) four subframe bolts (I assume full alignment will be required after fitting) reconnect the ARB and droplinks, bolt the steering rack back to the subframe, connect up the balljoints (which also look really clean) and job done.

Won't you need some washers for ball joints to fit to standard hubs or is that just the 2wd versions

the job is easy and you will be fine

as for it being a steal it really is but this wil happen and people havent clocked onto the fact this is an upgrade for other cars

there was a guy selling a full lcr front end with polybushedarms and quick rack with hubs for £100 because he didnt realise it was a mod !!!! i missed it by 2 mins !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! aaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrhhhhhhhhh lol

I seem to recall someone saying that its not needed on the 4x4? Snowmuncher I think

To anyone thinking of replacing the subframe bushes with Polyurethane.  Unless you are taking the car regular for track days I wouldn`t bother.  Poly bushes just give less, so the vibrations and movement are simply transferred to other components increasing wear elsewhere and if you polybush everything you are just reducing the lifespan of other components.   Good quality genuine subframe bushes are the way to go for a nice smooth quiet ride.  Polyurethane is just a gimmick.  Do all the super car manufacturers use Polyurethane from factory?

And get it tracked once you have bolted it all back together :)
