110 tdi Elegance on Y reg / 2001 : where is the CEL check engine light ?

Featured Replies

Dear Briskoda,

I have had 2 trouble free years with my '06 Fabia vRS and have been very quiet on this forum, but i now need to call upon your help with regards to purchasing an additional vehicle.

Today I went to view a 2001 Skoda Octavia 110 tdi Elegance on a Y plate, and for the life of me i could not see a check engine light on the dash display ( lots of other lights ABS etc when key first turned )

I did not have access to a user manual for reference, so could someone please confirm if there is a CEL symbol on this particular model, and where about it would be on the dash display ,

>>> most importantly please confirm if it should illuminate and then extinguish on first turn of the key.

The seller informs me that the CEL light will only illuminate when a fault is present.... ( I don't believe that :wonder: and think that the bulb may have been removed)

A photo or diagram from the user manual would be most useful.

Thanking you all in advance

I'm sure on my VRS if you held the key at position 1 the check engine light would come on but then go out after a while, or it would go out if you then turned the ignition all the way on and started the car.

Might be worth you purchasing a cheap fault code scanner from ebay, that way you can be sure if a car you look at has any stored fault codes, and if there are any faults in future you can diagnose them yourself instead of paying a garage.

Thank you chicken for teh reply and advise :)

My good friend has a VAG COM type scanner, but he was unavailable for the viewing or to lend at short notice. If i go back i will try and borrow....

But for now i simply need a YES or NO about the CEL light and its location on the head up display.

My "testing engine electronics" light as the CEL light is called in the driver's manual, does not light on turning the key. The manual also says that is not fitted to all vehicles. Its location is bottom left under the warning light with an orange triangle.

I have always assumed that it is only needed on petrol engines for plug or oxygen sensor failure and not needed on diesels but I may be wrong.

Edit: Missing word

Thanks Raf_ and pikpilot for your replies

Now i feel more confused

Any other 2001 Octavia 110tdi elegance owners care to chip in please ?.

The glowplug light doubles as the CEL on early diesels. If it doesn't come on there is probably a fault with the glowplug system.

I think of it more as the "something has gone wrong in a sort of vague wavey manner" light.

I had a problem with the 109 relay that casued the glow plug light to come on then go straight off again.

Just checked my car (2003 110tdi) it doesn't have the CEL, just the glow plug light. SWMBO's petrol Leon does have so if that light does come on it means someone has nicked your engine and replaced it with a petrol one.

All bets are off when you have a relay 109 (ECU power relay) problem, as part of the ECU loses power

think you need to do a code scan for piece of mind buddy

It happened at the same time as the CTS going gaga so it made starting fun and idle was a bit erratic.
