Oil advice please

Featured Replies

Hi Folks, recently stumbled across the oil related article on the site & found it really interesting/informative. For a while now I've chopped and changed with what I put in the pick up (1999), previously tending to use mineral base and now semi syn 15/40. I've always opted for the mid range price wise but would be interested to know what views/preferences are out there amongst members. Cheers.

Currently Fellyless, but the 10/50 from Lidl got used in the two 1.3litre cars we owned, they ran very well on it and gave us 45-50mpg. I used the same stuff in my mega mileage (254k), petrol Toyota for several years without issue as well.

I'd stick with the 15W40; it's what's most often recommended for diesels viscosity-wise, and I know of plenty (mostly PSA and VAG) that have done 500_000 miles or so with regular oil changes.

Hi & thanks very much. I think that confirms what I'm using isn't far off the mark.

I use 10W/40 semi synthetic. Does the job, not the cheapest mind you. At least its cheaper than what my old Ford used. 5W/30 fully synthetic. Mega pricey!

Hi & cheers. Is there a benefit in using 10/40 as opposed to 15/40 which has always been my choice. I think I'm gradually unravelling the mysterys of lubrication?

You should use what was specced when the engine was made. What engine is it, and what is supposed to be run in it?

8v, 1.6mpi. I've always used what I spec'd and it runs sweet + don't need to top up between 10k changes so that does for me. The post was more to gauge what others are using in similar age/spec vehicles and why. Ta.
