Self Tinting vRS Estate

Featured Replies

So wanting to tint from b pillar back, would like to go dark as possible but without making the front windows look out of place if you know what I mean car is Black Magic in colour, options from darkest, 5%, 20%, 35%, 50%, and 70% and Im aware that there are factory tints already on the glass (notsure if its actually a film or a tint applied during mixing the glass when molten)

I have been told by a few tinters that the darker the rear window the darker the overall interior will look so even in the front it will be harder to see in.

I was thinking 5% only on the back window then 20% at the back boot window and rear doors so it kinda fades from dark to light, or 20% back and 35% sides

I did a little research on learned a few tips but I still have my concerns, mainly if I mess up isnt it a PITA to remove. Also I think it will be difficult to get the rear windows properly done without removing the door card.

Then I found these

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PRE-CUT-CAR-WINDOW-TINT-AUTO-FILM-Skoda-Octavia-Estate-05-Rear-Kit-/250932627401?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item3a6cc007c9#ht_2361wt_1396

And for that price the only drawback is my messing it up and having to clean the glue off the windows.

Also any photos of tinted Estates in black, I did search but only got one result

As above, a right royal pita to do yourself. Had mine done professionally, took them half a day & had a bit of a deal as paid cash;-)

Get it done by the people that know how to do it.

Also check out the extra cost on your insurance as it needs to be declared.

Really you guys all sound like my dad who I can remember a long time ago when I was about 12 when he spent the day cursing trying to tint his windows.

So this really is a profesional jobbie then, even with pre cut tints and test fitting, heatshrinking on outside of glass first. Nobody here done it themsevles!

I tinted my own and it was the dogs.

Dogs dinner.

Eventually I worked out how to apply it without air bubbles and it looked ok.

If I had never opened the windows it would still be ok. But I did and the vertical scratches started.

Eventually I worked out how to get it off.

Vertical scratches? are you sure they werent creases, did you heat the tint onto the outside of the glass first to shape it and remove the 'fingers'

Also what did you work out to get it off, the scratches/creases or the entire tint film.

This is my car with the factory tints. (It is the glass and not a film)

Then I added the Skoda OEM sun blinds, bonus being you can remove these and take to your next car or sell on if you change.

Cost £227 all in for all 5 blinds which is less than you will pay for a decent tinting place to do it. I was quoted £350 for mine

Carl, do you have any idea what % the OE Sunset glass is?

Hi thinks for the pics, what is the visibility like from inside, but to be fair I would rather tints and would happy pay that price for a professional, one up by me charges circa £40 a window im sure he would do it cheaper seeing as im a returning customer and his work was top notch using the best tints available.

No idea Martin. Looking at them I would say they allow about 70-75% of the light through compared to the front glass.

Visibility is good as they are a mesh type blind so you can still see through them very well.

How much!

Tintz.uk in Lincoln did mine for £170

I thought the same, I quite like your tints is that the darkest tints you got?

Don't forget I'm "darn sarf" where everything is more expensive, done in pristine clinically clean units and not the next door neighbour Bob's shed like "oop norf";)

Can't recall what tint this was, but it certainly wasn't the darkest

The thing that puts me off tints is being able to see the Heating and Antenna elements in the glass. It's as if they get highlighted. Unavoidable I know and is just a personal preference of mine.

Looks limo black!

Might have a rethink about tints percent then, maybe 20% around boot and 35% on rear doors to fade it into the front glass, probably going to have a chat with the tinter up here to get a better idea.

I still want to try doing it myself, it really doesnt look all that hard and I have solvent cleaner to remove the glue if I do mess up! Just dont have the money right now

Do bear in mind that Mr Plod may take an interest in your car if they consider it too dark and you can get a fine (either £30 or £60)+ enforcement notice to remove it.

So just make sure that it complies with the legal side (amount of light transmittance) of things otherwise you could waste your money.

You had better read my first post.

And do your research

I've got the oem blinds in my rear door windows and roller blind on the boot window. I got them on my first vrs and have transferred them so this is the third car they've been on. I much prefer them to tints.

Only if you do the Front windows and windscreen.

From the B-Pillar back you can make them as dark as you like.

Sorry but in this day and age where Plod is so darn picky, I wouldn't give them the opportunity full stop!

It's all about the money they can screw out of us. Innit!

'Plod' can still, believe it or not, only ticket you for something that is actually illegal, as per Carl's post above

Ok a challenge for you then. Find me someone who has had money "screwed" out of them by "plod" for rear window tints and not "a mate of a mate's brother's, sister's, cousin's, uncle 4 times removed on your auntie's side next door neighbour" :)

I guarantee you won't find anything as it's not illegal from the B-Pillar back.

Agree with Carl and Bryan on legality tbh. On the subject of price I have had a couple of quotes for my B pillars back, £140 and £160, and I live "darn sarf" :p

As much as I like the JPS Octavia, I think I would want to go slightly lighter on a black car, just to avoid the 'Hearse' look......
