Hi i was driving the other day when my octavia hit a flat spot i gave it two heavy revs then couldnt see the road behind for white smoke i drove a little while and parked up to find a big pool of oil i was told the turbo had blown. I have been trying to price a replacement turbo the car is a 2002 octavia ambiente 1.9 tdi it is the 90 bhp and engine code ALH but i have been told there are 3 different turbos ranging from £400 to £650 is this true or am i being waffled i would appreciate any help as i would like to fix if poss as i like the car and have just done cam belts etc etc. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Cheers Richy

I had to replace mine after an encounter with a couple of remaps that weren't suitable. I looked around and in the end bought a turbo from Skoda for about £650. Not the cheapest available, but it's been fine for nearly two years now. I only really had one choice of turbo for my car unless I went down the hybrid route, but I wanted to stick with like for like.

Have you asked Skoda for a price?

2002 90, puts it as post facelift, so you will be looking for a VNT based turbo I believe. The early (pre-facelift) 90 based turbos had a wastegate.

£650+vat for a turbo was what Skoda quoted me a few years ago (the 110 TDI VNT based turbo).

Hi just one more question after i gave the car a heavy rev the turbo blew then the car carried on revving on its own does this sound just like turbo problem or could something else have blown at same time im ready to part with cash for turbo but dont really want to spend any more as cars not worth it any advice appreciated Thanks

Oil seals in the turbo will have failed, the engine would have then been burning oil which was meant to be lubricating the turbo.

The cat / exhaust pipework may well have oil in it too, so expect some white smoke/smell after changing the turbo. Also worth removing and draining the intercooler too.

Try Greg at Small Engine, Nottingham www.small-engine.co.uk. He can supply you with a recon at a good price, or supply and fit for about £675. Check out his website. He is highly recommended and he has customers from all over the country, not just local!

Greg also used to be a poster on here, not seen him around so much recently. He appeared to know his stuff and was always a friendly guy - from what I can gather,
