Nightmares with brakes.

Featured Replies

All I can say is what a nightmare I had  The calipers did not want to come off for love nor money. Ended up having to use a hammer :D But after taking the pads off (which were glazed like hell) using copperslip where it was needed the handbrake is now biting again. I wanted to do my fronts as well but I am ill so will have to wait. Almost had a heart attack with the nearside piston, I thought it had died. I rewound it using the caliper winding tool, and it rewound ok, but the rewinding tool was not wanting to come out. In the end it just needed a spanner to release some tension (can't really explain how).

Here's how I did it (no piccies sorry)

1. Take off the wheel (bit obvious) and make sure the car is secure on axle stands. Make sure the handbrake is off

2. Undo the two caliper retaining screws (think they where 13mm)

3. (This is what I had to do) File or chip off the rust that is on the lip of the

disc.

4. (again this is me) Using the blunt end of a small chisel and a hammer. I hit

the brake pad on the metal bit. This eventually moved the pad so the

caliper could come off.

5. Check/replace brakes.

6. Rewind the caliper in a slow clockwise direction Using the caliper rewinding

tool.

7. Put pads back on.

8. Reattach the calliper and replace screws.

9. Pump brakes to make sure they move.

10. If happy put wheel on.

Not the best write up but gives a general idea I hope.
