New Yeti or Superb?

Featured Replies

Currently contemplating changing the Yeti for either another Yeti or a Superb, and not sure what to do.

I would like a DSG car this time round and given recent winters swmbo is pretty sure we should get another 4x4. Now I was considering a petrol model this time round as I only do about 8-10k miles a year, but Skoda seem to only offer DSG 4x4 models of the Yeti & Superb in Diesel form.

DSG 4x4 Yeti Diesel Elegance with options comes to £24,450 (may get cheaper via DTD)

DSG Superb Elegance 4x4 Hatch with options comes to £27,000 but is currently available on the 0% vat offer so that would bring it down to probably slightly less than the Yeti.

Decisions Decisions.......

I think you need to ask yourself a few questions, which might help you decide on the route to take.

What do i like about the Yeti? and is the Superb as good/better/worse in these areas?

What do i dislike about the Yeti? and would the Superb be the same/better/worse in these areas?

Do i need a bigger boot?

What are the running costs for both? (include initial purchase price, Insurance costs, MPG, servicing)

Above all try and get an extended test drive of the superb, even if it means having to hire one for a few days, could be money well spent if you find that you don't like it.

Well put Rich, was typing nigh on the same message when yours popped up!

Ditto to what Rich has said. Just to add a note though, currently the Superb hatch is available with 0% VAT until the end of the month, this deal could change in the next quarter though.

Without going off topic, hows the fuel consumption getting on now Rich?

Lee see here for answer so it doesn't got off topic

Each to their own but to me the Superb hatch is one of the ugliest car's side on you can imagine. That hang down tail looks like a Hyena running away from something.... Horrible. BUT the Superb Estate. Now that is one yummy looking car and also one of Autocar's five Best cars in the (real) world:

Superb or Yeti. You won't go wrong with either but as you already know the Yeti stands out more than the Superb (which won't get noticed at all I suspect as to most people it is just a car).

In the Superb I would only (and did) consider the estate because the hatch has a not very nice looking rear end IMO.

Plus I don't have rear passengers very often, so it seemed daft to be moving round all that rear space that's not needed.

If we had a bigger family and kids were teenagers then I'd have been more tempted.

But I find the Yeti more handy for driving round London due to the smaller dimensions. The extra visibility from being that bit taller is handy too.

Great car the Superb estate if it suits your needs.

Agreed that the Yeti will get more looks than the Superb - they are both good cars but you need to consider their relative pros and cons, and whether they fit with your needs.

I had the choice of either Yeti or Superb but due to the fact of a having young twins (5 yrs old) we opted for the Superb Estate.

Have driven a Superb II 170 DSG twin door a few times, as my father has one. Very nice car to drive but for my needs it's far to long, plus the view out as both passenger and driver is nowhere near as good as the Yeti.

If space is not a prime factor, then my choice would be to stay with the Monster.

Interesting. Today my Yeti was into Sinclair Skoda in Swansea having a recall diesel delivery pipe sorted and the sales manager came over for a natter as he usually does.

His forecourt was littered with Yetis and I commented that the supply hassles of the past year or so seemed to have been sorted out. His response was that while they can get Greenline easily, and many of the other levels of the Yeti the thing that is STILL causing supply problems is the 4*4 system, with a wait of 7-8 months being the norm. He then went on to say that the second biggest delay is with the fabulous DSG gearbox, which again is prone to that 7-8 months lead time.

From those comments it would appear that any decision you make should be done today and the order placed!!!!!!! And you might get it in time for this year's snow next December.

When I was looking to replace the Octavia, I test drove the Superb, having discounted the Yeti as it wasn't available with auto and 4x4.

I thought the Superb Estate was great, and loved the comfort and the performance of the CR170 DSG and the quietness.

Then I discovered that the Yeti had become available with 4x4 & DSG. The superb wasn't. (it is now as is the Octavia Scout)

My girls have now grown up enough not to want to come with us any more, so I don't need the boot space any more. My driving also changed and mileage dropped by 50% to about 15-16,000 per year, and is now largely around London. The Yeti was the obvious choice as BossFox mentioned above for the same reasons, driving position, it is 2 feet, yes 2 feet (600mm) shorter than the Superb and has a tiny turning circle. Perfect for driving around London.

It isn't as economical I am sure.

There is now the Octavia Scout as an alternative.

Yeti 4x4 DSG

Scout 4x4 DSG

Superb Estate 4x4 DSG

All diesels unfortunately. No petrol 4x4 DSG's available in the UK yet.

I like the idea of the twin door, but hate the looks, so not an option for me.

To the OP.

Do you really, really need 4x4?

A Yeti 1.2tsi DSG with a spare set of wheels will be cheaper by a long way than a Yeti 4x4 DSG, and will go almost anywhere the 4x4 will in snow and ice on roads.

If you drive off road, then you may well need 4x4 if where you go you will get stuck due to mud etc.

Food for thought.

I wholeheartedly agree with this comment. I can't even believe it comes from the same manufacturer as my Yeti.

Having said that, when I was looking at a Yeti for the first time at a dealers, a salesperson was talking to a customer on the phone, who was asking about Skodas, and when he was explaining the Yeti, he specifically said "It won't win any beauty contests."

I really like the Superb, when I sat in one after I placed my deposit on the Yeti, I actually thought about changing it...

Anyway, its a totally different type of car. Superb fills the void left by the Ford Scorpio, Vauxhall Senator/Omega and to some extent the Saab 9-5 perfectly.

It is extremely good value for money and if you are never going to sell it, then I don't think depreciation is something you need to worry about.

If it cost cheaper than the Yeti on the same spec then I would get the Superb, or push the boat out slightly more and get the 3.6 V6, which is fitted with all the toys.

Really beej?

I do however agree with the dealers comments!

I test drove a 140CR Elegance Yeti (they had no 140CR Superb's in) and our innitial though was ... "boy it's ugly" it did drive nicely though albeit not in the same class as the Superb Elegance, I have since VCDS'd lots of Yeti's and they certainly do grow on you and if you want the higher seating position they give then they are a good option, obviously because they are taller and styled on a brick this does effect the MPG.

I then test drove the Superb Elegance (Estate with DSG) which confirmed that DSG was not for me (far too 'clunky' going into 1st and reverse) the Superb is a more comfortable and quieter ride due to its size and returns more MPG due to the streamlined shape.

I too would not even consider the Superb saloon due to it being 'pig ugly' IMO, but yet again others like it and the twinhatch design.

Neither are a bad car - far from it but IMO what they offer is very different.

While I was at dealers this week, I perused a few superbs, golfs and passats (cc and estate). I must say the superb was by far the nicest to sit in, tbh I was not impressed with the cc.
