1.2 HTP Oil Leak!

Featured Replies

Hello everyone,

My 1.2 HTP '03 Fabia has been running great recently, I noticed a few spots of oil on the drive so investigated yesterday and worked out that the oil is coming out of a kind of cylinder thing that comes out the engine, above the alternator. It has a massive plastic hex thing on the top for tightening it and it says 255nm, which I'm guessing is a required amount of torque.

Am I right in thinking this is the oil filter? Could it be that it's not tight enough or the seal has worn?

I checked the oil level and she's still fine, not leaking lots but still want it sorted.

Is there any danger in the oil running into the alternator?

Thanks,

Matt

Yes

Yes

Understandable, you could just try removing the filter, clean and re-torque, but if it hasn't been done in a while I would do an oil change and replace the oil filter and make sure it is replaced at the correct torque, remember to fit a new o ring (washer).

Is there any danger in the oil running into the alternator?

Yes, best to cover the alternator with a clean rag when removing and replacing the oil filter.

Thank you so much for all that!

One thing though, I meant it's kinda already dripped into and onto the alternator, is this a problem? Electrics seem to have been fine.

No probs mate.

It's certainly not ideal and could effect the long term lifespan of the alternator. But if the leak from the filter is resolved quickly and the alternator is still working then I certainly wouldn't replace it just because a bit of oil has got on it, but you may notice a small amount of smoke/burning oil smell for a small amount of time, you will just have to see how you get on and keep an eye on it...

Is the oil filter genuinely 200+ nm?

Exactly the same problem found the other day on my 1.2. Had my service and MOT yesterday and asked if they could sort it, turned out to be oil filter seal.

No, 25.

Was going to say last time I torqued about 200 I snapped 2 bars!

No, 25.

And you will do as much damage overtightenign as under tightening.

I take it that all oil filters on Fabias are old school, as in casings with an internal element, as opposed to can type filters.Haynes advice is to fit new washers throughout on filter replacement, something that the fast fit places don't( always ) do . It's strange that my first car , a old Wolsely of unknown vintage, had one of these ,and since then on BL/BMC cars /Vauxhals etc, none has. It's always been can types.

Tried loosening and then tightening it again this weekend at it's still doing it, slowly, so I figure it's the washer / gasket / seal, or whatever you want to call it.

Anyone know where I can get one?

Thanks,

Matt

Hello. I m new on this forum, and i have a Skoda Fabia Sedan, 2006, 1.2 Bme, 47 kw. I changed 2 times the front crankshaft seal (Oem), but still leaking. My mechanic says the oil came up to down, and is not faulty the front crankshaft seal. Can be the oil pan gasket with problems, cap of distribusion? Any advice will help me. Thank s, and excuse for my english.
