octavia 1.8t 150bhp aum engine. oil light on

Featured Replies

hi folks i have an issue and am looking for advice. my brother has the above mentioned car and we are having iol preaasure warnings appearing on the dash board. this morning the low oil light came on so we topped it up and i took the car to get a few small jobs sorted and did about 60 miles with no issues. i was on my way home and after 15 mile the low oil preassure light flashed on for about 3 seconds and went off. after another 4 miles it came on and stayed on. i stopped the car looked things over and couldnt see anything obvious. i checked the oil level which was fine and set off again. after a few more miles it happened again. the engine sounds sweet and the light goes off after being shut off and resarting. i am aware of the problemms these engines have with oil pumps and they seem to go at about 90,000 miles ish as did this one. as a result the pump was renewed 2 years ago.is there anything else that is a common issue that may cause this. the car is sweet otherwise and pulls like a train and idles lovley with no excess noise. i am going to do an engine flush in the morning with fresh oil and filter and see if that helps. i am also going to check the oil pressure with an extrenal gauge. where is the pressure switch on these mounted?

many thanks in advance for your help.

sounds typical of a blocked oil strainer

drop the sump and replace - the mesh will probably be blocked

continue driving at your peril - if you do a real chance of major top end damage

If the light was red, it means low or no oil pressure, and you shouldn't run the engine at all. This is probably the oil strainer blocking up, or a failed pump, or both, like stskoda said. If you do run it with a red light, it's goodbye turbo and possibly head damage too.

If it's yellow, it means low oil level or dodgy level sensor if the level is actually correct. Either way, it wants looking at.

Also, there's a switch in the bonnet lock mechanism. It won't put the light off it it doesn't sense the bonnet opening. Could be a dodgy switch in there too.

thanks for the replies folks. this switch on the bonnet catch could that be affected by the catch being siezed up? it was tight to get the thing open this morning.

well after talking to a mate he pointed me to the breather hoses. when i drove the car this morning i noticed it only happened on full boost. when i checked the breathers they fell to bits. gonna go on a pipe hunt the morrow. thank you for the help though guys appreaciated

i'd make sure you definately don't have oil pressure problems before you think the problem is solved

think you must be mistaking the CEL for the oil pressure warning - check the manual if in doubt

nope deffo the oil preassure warning. i know another lad with the exact same model had the same issue. going to order and oil strainer just incase so i have one for it but should hopefully be ok by the end of play tomorrow. it has 2 chances it either will or it wont

ok have flushed the oil and changed the breather hoses and the oile preassure light is gone. however i am having idle issues now. the car goes down the road lovely but will not idle smooth when you stop and more often than not cuts out. i have looked and cannot see anynmore hoses either slplit or loose. am currently scratching my head tbh. i know it cant be much or she wouldnt go at all.

Have you changed all of the breather hoses or just the y pipe?, if the answer is yes then try cleaning the throttle body out.

You may have extinguished the lamp temporarily due to the higher viscosity of the new oil. I would do an external gauge check to be sure, and if it is on the low side clean or repklace the pickup pipe.

got the pickup pipe on order in anticipation of it coming back. replaced all the breathers as they just fell to bits am going to try to get a diagnostic done tomorrow as my brother said this is exatly what it did last time the coils went. also noticed a rotton egg smell with it aswell.

Have you scanned the car for codes at all, smell may be the start of a cat/rear o2 sensor issue.

i think that is my next port of call tbh. have messaged a lad local to me on here that has a code reader. failing that having looked on google to try and learn a bit do you know what this part does?

it is the only piece i am not 100% on how it should work and the only bit i did not replace. any ideas? the part number is 058133753b

It is a suction jet valve, primary purpose to supply vacuum to servo system at times of high demand - hills, in traffic etc, although it does do other things as well. Had to do one of these on a mates VW, as they can split at the y part - really not nice, pipes grip on for england :)

I had this and replaced the switch, pump and strainer and it turns out its the actual wiring at fault! £600 lighter as a result but peace of mind on the other hand

This was why I suggested a physical pressure check, I know an external gauge might cost a few quid, but it could save hundreds either way. Check out machinemart, they do good tools for the diy user, but if you are going to use it for a living, you need to go further up the food chain - bluepoint, snap-on etc.

Sorry, couldn't edit the original post. Anyway, take a look here, reasonable accuracy, and not too dear as this type of equipment goes, http://www.sealey.co...&productid=8924

chhers for that might have to pick one of them up. going to try and get the fault memory done today and see whrere we get to

found it has a dead coilpack so this is causing the idle issue. going to pick one up tomorrow.

There is a dealer recall on this issue, give your local Skoda dealer a call in the morning and see if your vehicle is in the recall, if it is, you get nice shiney new ones for free. :)

yeah i checked and no its not as it has no history worth a button and someone else has changed them in the past for non skoda coils. found number 3 was gone and number 2 was not brill so stuck 2 in and hey presto its sorted. the throttle body had to be cleaned out aswell but wasnt bad as i expected. passed it mot today so think we are almost sorted. flushed the oil and there was some gunge in it so am going to do another change in a week or 2 and do the pickup pipe but it all seems good for now. got the garage over the road to check the preassure and it was fine. happy days.

but thanks again for your help on this one folks was appreaciated
