felicia pickup 1.3 petrol to felicia 19 diesel - anyone?

Featured Replies

So... i dont like the fuel consumption on my felica 1.3 and found a 19 diesel off a felicia complete with gearbox.

what would i need more to convert the felicia to 19 diesel ?

same shafts should work?

radiator of the 13 petrol works fine?

same mountings as the 13 petrol ?

any tips?

its been asked on here before

engine and gearbox along with rad and cooling fan and wiring/engine wiring loom with glowplug control unit

diesel fuel filler and pickup unit for the fuel tank (ideally use the fuel tank off diesel)

engine mounting to body shell requires 2 x captive nuts in the chassis rail

exhaust and either weld the downpipe mounts onto your X member or swap to the diesel one

Immobilisor unit and key as the petrol one can't talk to the diesel unit

fuel pipes

heater box as it won't fit with the petrol one in there.

probly more that i have missed

in short lots basically

instrument cluster is different too, plus the dash wiring isnt the same... It's simply not worth the effort... Go and buy one which is diesel to start with.

Dash wireing for what? Instrument cluster? Just a temp guage and oil pressure light thats all

Mine doesnt have an immobiliser! Hmm i was thinking it would have involved less! Dont see why i need alll the loom as your saying.. we put diesel engines in all sorts off cars whit minnimum ptoblems over here.. cant see a swap of engine from the same car woukd be that different lol

well you asked!!!!!

ok if you wanted to "just fit one " you could fit the engine and rad and fuel tank then wire the glow plugs to a push switch etc and make do with no cold start advance etc.

basically yes it will fit if you have the mounts and could be bodged to make it run

As Jim says, the wiring is significantly different - the wiring for the heater is different for a start, and you need the heater 'cos it takes up less space. Jim knows these cars inside out, he's forgotten more about them that I know.... And as said, unless you want to disable the immobiliser (which will involve removing the diesel pump to let you remove the stop solenoid) and so on then you'll need to do the full whack.

Hmm im gonig to try this out.. mot easy to find a skoda felica pickup let alone a perfect condition like mine and diesel!

so i found an engine.. are the coil springs of the diesel one the same as petrol?

the guy i found the engine from also has a front cut of a felicia mpi with power steering.. can i use all the stuff from the front cut to fit it on my pickup and use it with the 19diesel? the 19 diesel engine has a pas pump too

springs are stiffer and to use power steering you will need everything including the steering column as it fits differently on the rack and the small plate on the bulkhead the rack passes thru.

the older felicia's used smaller bolts (8mm with 13mm head) to hold the rack to the x member and the newer/PAS ones use 10mm (with 14mm head) bolts so you may need to swap the xmember to suit too as otherwise the brackets won't tighten properly.

  • Author

Yes infact he said i should take the xmember too ! Is the mounting of the engine on the driver side same as the petrol one? I mean can i use the same bracket as rhe petrol one and buy a mounting for the engine, as the engine dousnt have that mount..

hi there your best bet is to get a diesel felicia as a donnor car because when i changed mine from 1.3 to 1.6 with air con there was loads different on the cars

took me a week to do all mine

if your cars not rotton then its worth it

Thanks for your reply. Yeah its deffenitly worth it.. not even a drop of rust! Im gonna use the engine and change the inlet manifold to a vw one.. smaller (cos of the blower unit) and the power steering from a felicia 13mpi im sure it wont be completly a straight swap and some custom work has to be done. Im not installing an a/c... For now lol

Buy a complete 1.9SDI donor, because I have a nasty feeling things like the PAS pump will be completely different

the engine mount that bolts to the body is the same as a 1.6 one but totally different to a 1.3, the pas pipework is different on the diesel engine too

  • Author

But its a matter of buying a mounting and job done? And as for the pipework just use some custom pipework..?

buy a donnor car the power steering is all diffrent only things are the same on 1.3 1.6 1.9 is the power steering rack and power steering coullom all pipes are diffrent on all engines

BUY A DONNOR CAR SO YOU GOT ALL YOU NEED

Cabbot buy a donor car as i didnt find any diesel model.. they are not popular over here and being a small island over here i practicly went every where for a donor car!! I was thinking i can use banjos and get pipe work done.. whats the diferrence? Pipework lenght ?

Dont forget that the same vintage VW caddy is basically the same vehicle with VW badges replacing the Skoda ones; I believe there are a few differences to the body work, but not much.

Yeah but there arent any caddys over here :(

Sadly you do need a complete car as a donor, and if you can't find one, you will really struggle to do the conversion. The SDI has too many unique parts compared to the 1.3, and having these fabricated will be pretty costly I should imagine. Also the 1.9SDi engine is a fair bit heavier than the 1.3 unit, so you have to think about things like the front springs.

Im doing this this week.. will let you know how all goes :)

This was finished, forgot to update :)

well i used the PAS including pipework from a 13 mpi and works, fitted perfectly on the 19 diesel lump.

Used a VW caddy radiator as i didnt have the one off a skoda. fitted fine too.

Removed the immobiliser and wired the fuel solonoid to the ignition etc works fine too.

Didnt need the fuel tank and everything else off a diesel as mention... petrol tank works perfectly fine. had no issues.. whats the difference?

Used a heater timer for the glow plugs etc, very easy to wire in etc.
