I am currently looking to upgrade my 04 plate octavia to something a bit newer. I've seen and test driven a 58 plate 2.0TDi and it was pretty nice on the face of it. However, the dealer told me it was a common rail rather than a PD engine, and also that it didn't need a timing belt replacement as a result.

This surprised me so I've done some googling and checked parkers etc and can find no reference to a 2.0litre TDI CR engine in 2008 apart from the vRS170, which this definitely wasn't, and I also asked my mechanic mate to check his database, which confirmed this. I'm no expert but the engine looked like all the other PDs I've seen and I'm wondering if the dealer could be feeding me a lie to cover the fact that the 80k service didn't address the timing belt. He also mentioned it didn't have the DPF, which he claimed was a bonus.

Before I go and ask him a bit more about this, does anyone have any better information they might share with me about whether the CR engine was around in late 2008, and if so whether the timing belt and DPF issues are likely to be as the dealer says.

Hi,

Unless its a vRS then it will be a PD. Only the vRS got the CR in 2008, the PD was still fitted to the rest of the 1.9 & 2.0 Octavia range until mid/late 2010. All except the Scout versions didn't have a DPF, which does avoid potential problems.

He's also wrong about the cambelt. All Octavia diesels have a cambelt and if yours is at 80K+ it will be due one soon.

Thanks Nick74, you have confirmed my fears. I'm going to ask him where he got his info from anyway, and the engine code ID, if nothing else just to see how he squirms!!

god almighty, this is a disgrace, that dealer is just talking pure rubbish, sounds like he hasnt a clue what he is talking about ( like alot of other dealers )

My vrs is a July 08 model and has the PD engine,if its a 58 plate then chances are its a PD also.I didn't think the CR came until early 09.

Dolla...... Nick74 is right regarding the CR/PD engine with both being used in the vRS through 2008/09.

Well he coffed when asked and admitted it was a pd claiming an honest mistake realted to the lease company maintenance printout he had. The engine code is bkd.

But obviously very much put off. It is a shame, was a nice car on the face of it. Thanks for all yr replies

well ok fair enough with PD or CR and his knoweldge of that

But the timing belt thing he told you was just rubbish. he should have known that.

maybe dont give up all hope, if its a nice car, dont totally rule it out due to an un knowledgeable dealer, just get them to pay for the timing belt change maybe

Only the 2.0 Scout and vRS PDs had a DPF. The rest of the Octavia 2.0 PDs didn't have DPFs so he is at least correct about one thing!

The BKD engine did not have a DPF fitted, and never did have. Only the vRS PD/CR and Scout had a DPF as already mentioned. I ran my BKD equipped Octavia for just short of 100K miles and it was still running well when I saw it recently more than 2 years after selling it.

I did follow this up with the dealer saying I was a bit unhappy and concerned belt hadn't been done, basically as a prelude to an offer which reflects this. He countered claiming belt interval is 150k km so not due yet. Does anyone know definitively for a Skoda Octavia with engine code bkd please. Ive read its at 120k km or about 80k miles on a number of websites.

It is 80k+ miles which mean that the belt should have been done at the last service done on 78k, if what I have read is correct.

mmmmm, I'd say regardless of what dealers etc will tell you, one would want to be changing the timing belt at 80,000 miles

Even if it hasn't done the miles, the belts due at 4 years.

just ask £400 to be knocked off the asking price and sort the belt out yourself with another garage as the dude doesn't sound very trustworthy

Yes exactly what I plan to do. I was just hoping if something definitive was out there saying it should be done at 80k, as my position would be strengthened if I can point to it.

I'm trying to stay one step ahead as I am being a bit flanneled - for example he's gone from telling me it didn't need a belt to now telling me it is now due at 150k miles (95k miles) and its a bit obvious he's flying by the seat of his pants. However, it is still a good deal if i can get a healthy discount.
