Rear fog light/s

Featured Replies

Iv'e done a quick search and only found this topic mentioned in Octavia.

My 10 month old Roomster 1.2 dsg Scout only has the offside rear fog light working.

One rear fog light? Is this the norm?

Based on what I know so far, you can enable the other light in BCM / J519 / Module 9 Central Electrics, it should be already wired up. You will need VCDS or similar interface cable to do it. Possibly Byte 9, Bit 1 in long coding, but that depends on the module.

The earliest I can confirm it and perhaps detail instructions will be when my Roomster arrives, so in 6-8 weeks from now. But I'll get there as I need both for trips abroad.

Thanks,dieselV6.It's in for a first service in about 6 weeks time. i'll make a note of what you said and ask the dealer to do that.

It just seems odd. It's a LONG time since I've driven in fog thick enough to warrant the rear lights , but as i recall, if i saw others with fog lights, it was 2.

VAG standard seems to be off side rear fog light only.

I was wondering if it might simply be a software change as I'd prefer to have 2 as well.

Rob.

My 3 year old 1.6 Tiptronic has both working.

just checked my roomster ( 1.2 se 105 bhp ) 2012 , 7 weeks old , i found only one rear fog lit , my last 2009 roomster had two rear fog lights , i have been told that one rear fog light on the face lift roomster is the norm

It's my understanding that only one rear fog light is enabled for safety.

I.e. so as not to confuse them with brake lights in thick fog.

Dealer cannot do it, you need someone with VCDS which contrary to popular belief is NOT used by the dealers.

I heard about UK dealers unwilling to enable both fogs, and, rather than safety concern, I see this as another example of VW meddling in Skoda affairs. Twin fog lights are essential for travel abroad, but of course VW brand switched to single fog lights some time ago as beancounters worked out it was 5 cents more profit.

Have a look at rear of newer Golfs, Passats etc, only one red and one white light in fog light position there. One more reason I won't even look at getting a new Passat. I do not mind even wiring the 2nd fog myself, but if the housing does not allow it and the rear fog light is not in the middle, the rear fog light is worse than useless abroad.

I recommend for anyone from Skoda UK to drive across Germany in thick fog, using rear fog light as per UK setting. If you manage to drive more than 10 motorway junctions without being stopped by the german police (who incidentally do not care about speed much unless it's roadworks or way over local limit), you are either incredibly lucky or the police are on strike :)

I often drive about 100-120 junctions across Germany...

The task on Roomster is very simple, either find the setting in VCDS / on forums for the particular controller and change it, or, if this is not possible, isolate one light using diodes and feed power from the active fog light.

While you're at it, you can put 5-brake light mod and have 3x LED+2 bulb brake lights, actually better and more visible than most cars. Canbus monitoring may get in the way, if it can be disabled via VCDS, good, if it cannot be disabled even better, as you just install resistors as constant load and switch to LEDs all round for the rear stop and fog lights.

Thanks for the replies. Well this topic has got a few owners out checking their lights!

  • 1 month later...

Just to finish off this debate:

My wife's roomster has arrived, and it had only one fog wired up. One repair wire and a lot of panels taken off/put on later, and it now has two LED fogs, doubling up as additional brake lights.

The rear fog light does not appear to be monitored at all, at least it took 1x3W and 2x3W LEDs without problems.
