Sooo slow window wipers

Featured Replies

Yesterday my window wipers decided to start moving very slowly across the screen even when on the fastest setting eventually coming to a stop half way across the screen.

Did a internet search and found it could be a partially seized wiper linkage or a duff wiper motor.

This evening i checked the wiper motor by removing the wiper linkage and then operating the motor which went onto the two different speeds ok.

I then peeled back the rubber covers from the wiper linkages and used a spray grease to lube things up followed by moving the linkages to make sure all was working smoothly which it seemed to be.

Put it all back the wipers still move very slowly :wall: .

Anyone had this problem and fixed it???

Plan on buying the whole motor and wiper linkage if it can't be sorted easily

Checked the wiring? Earth could be easy to check if you've got some jump leads...

Also worth checking battery voltage... Should be 13.8-14.4 at idle. Anything in the 11s or 12s might indicate alternater troubles or the alternator "signal" wire.

Thanks for reply! The car has a new 77ah Bosh battery running 14v at idle so all ok with that. How do you check for a faulty earth with jump leads?

I had this on my skoda ibiza mk4 - found to be the linkage - bought from a scrappy for £30

I didnt take the linkage off before and test it though

I would just buy a motor and mechanism

I have a skoda ibiza mk4 too!

Used this title to join in on the big timed trackday but was booted off as i wasn't eligible as my skoda was made in Spain!

Off to garage to fix my wipers now as it need sorting before it rains.

Being careful... Attach the black jumplead only, between the body of the wiper motor or nearby large bolt and the battery neg post.

All fixed now  Seized up spindle on passenger wiper. Cleaned and greased job jobed!

This could be a worth while pre planned maintenance thing as loosing your wipers in heavy rain at night could be slightly inconvenient.

thanx to prev listings re slowing wipers Octavia mk1 all fixed. very definitely seized spindle, remove unit and release spindle from shaft small circlip washer and seal on top shaft drops out if free! mine so tight amazing even moved, cleaned lubricated and now have as new speedy wipers for first time in yonks, well worth the hours work, scrappys may well be tired too so well worth a try in my  book.... good luck...

I think that as the previous but one poster put it, plan on seeing this area as one that will need attention eventually - so cleaning up and re-lubing before problems sort can only be a smart move! I thought about doing this on my wife's 2002 Polo, but laziness on my part meant that they started to slow down slightly before I sprang into action, so I'd guess this might be a 8 year/80K miles job to avoid any slowing down of wipers. (oh bother the late 2009 Ibiza that my daughter is back running will be due very soon!)
