Track day helmets

Featured Replies

Im doing my first track day at end of next month and wondered what everybodys thoughts were on helmets,

I did have a scooter for a year when i was 17 for a year so am no stranger to wearing a full face job but would a open face be better for track day car wise,

Been to north wales for a few days and called at demon tweeks on way home today but they were a little out of my price range for a trackday starter anyway plus i wear glasses aswell and couldn't get my current pair on with a helmet on which i only found out today,

Just wondered what everyones thoughts were??

I prefer open face as less claustrophobic than a full face one. Thats just me though. :D Had mine for years now. I wear glasses too but can put the glasses back on after putting the helmet on.

How much you looking at spending? A bit surprised when you visited DT that they didn't have anything suitable available.

The cheapest one they had in the shop was 220 quid including the dreaded VAT,

I'd seen them selling ones on ebay cheaper but didn't know what size i needed

You can buy a starter helmet which is open faced from Demon Tweeks for around £60-£80. And your a freedom member so you can use the 10% discount for DT :)

Just odd that DT advertise those level of helmets on eBay, but don't have them available for people who come in-store :S

I bought a new white, road legal, open face, peaked moped helmet from ebay for about £35.

Added a few stickers to tart it up a bit, (with help from the mighty Pastyboy!!)

and Voila!

Does the job...

Can you use bike helmets for track days?

yes ofcourse if its safe enough for you to fall off a motorbike it must be safe enough to wear inside a car strapped into a seat lol

i believe helmets in cars can be more dangerous and should only be worn if wearing a hans device imo

Nice work Mr Grr :)

Looks good that. And yes, perfectly permissible for a bike helmet to be used.

Nice work Grr. Liking it. That's the sort of helmet DT sell for £60.

Lots of helmets aren't FIA approved but hardly any events care about this.

You'll pay an awful lot more for FIA approved stuff, and it's just not necessary at this level.

  • 4 weeks later...

Just ordered one from Demon Tweeks. Their two cheapest race helmets are back order and will take 2-3 weeks to arrive.

I can't find anywhere else apart from ebay that sells open face track day helmets for less than £60.

Looks like I'll be renting at Combe again this year! :(

I use a normal full face helmet with the visor removed. Works fine, however having tried an open face helmet id probably plump for one in the future as there is so much more lateral vision available.

I wouldnt waste money on FIA approved helmets etc unless A-your loaded, or B- your in a race series. I personally cant see the point in spending large sums of money on a helmet thats only going to be worn inside a car when im surrounded by airbags front and rear. Even a cheap helmet is adequate IMO.

Some real bargains crop up on ebay.

I got a Arai open face helmet (same one they use on top gear) that's very nice for about a quarter of it's new price.

Immaculate condition with original box and bag!

  • 3 weeks later...

After 3-4 weeks I'm finally going to get my open face helmet delivered by Demon Tweeks. Seem they are on back order everywhere. Shame I've done 3 track days already without it but oh well.
