Problem starting on cold morning

Featured Replies

Hi,

I wonder if anyone has any ideas on this? During the winter my fabia VRS had a bit of trouble starting in cold mornings. The glow plug light wouldn't come on the first few times turning the ignition on. Once it did the car was trouble free for the rest of the day. I scanned with vagcom and found no errors, but replaced the coolant temp sensor, glow plug relay and ECU relay. This corresponded with temperatures becoming a bit warmer in the morning and the car has started flawlessly for the last month.

The same problem has reared its ugly head again today as it was cold this morning but I couldn't get the glow plug light coming on at all and the car wouldn't start at all. Any ideas of what else it could be?

Im thinking of getting new glow plugs today and fitting them tonight, also I was going to check the voltage at the glow plugs when I turn on the ignition. I'll give it another vagcom scan as well just in case. Does that sound the next reasonable step?

thanks

stu

Check the voltage of the battery as well while you're at it

Yes, it's based on a Merc... but the logic's the same and will hopefully give you some points to check. I found it because I was looking into checking the plugs the selves with a multi meter..

Excellent.

The battery was replaced at the around about the beginning of December with a new Bosch Silver one. I'll check it though, it does crank the starter fine though.

Just read that merc guide, very interesting. I'll give that a shot and see where it leads me. ta

Came home tonight and the glow plugs fired first time. Scanned it with vagcom and it found code 01117 which indicates "engine pre-heating inoperable", I cleared it and I'll see what happens tomorrow morning. It was chilly out and I couldn't find my long 10mm socket so I'll do the plugs tomorrow night hopefully.

Can't stand intermittent problems!

Post back with how you get on, ive wanted to do the glow plugs on my sdi but been put off by a friend at the dealers saying it can easily turn into a big job when they snap, which he said they often do....
