Featured Replies

Just had a look in the boot and i have a brand spanking new 17" spider alloy with continental tire that hasnt seen the light of day! Result!

Optional extra or standard??

I had one too, so I reckon standard

Both mine have had them :)

Yep standard on mk 1 Octy

Mine has one also.

Who's gonna be the first one Daft enough to put one on and do some high speed driving through the twisties? lol. Remember they're quite a few years old now! lol

Me!! Im on a 55 plate and the rubber hasnt aged by looking at it! The tires on my car now have more rubber perishing to them :o

lol its not how it looks like that matters. Its what's on the inside lol

It'll be reet!

My Estate has a steel in the boot... :(

The month and year of manufacture will be marked on the tyre wall. Supposedly you shouldn't use tyres over a certain age for obvious reasons.

However! Both of my rear wheels/tyres are mint ex-spares, so are 9-10yrs old each. Not had any problems with them.... yet.

I'm trying to maximise wear rates through spirited lift off oversteer where possible though!

I mentioned this in another thread last month about my mint looking spare. I've had the car from new and have only had the spare on once before for a day when I had a puncture about five years ago. Anyway, I ran it for two weeks last month on the nearside front and it was downright dangerous. It had very little grip compared to the Hankook on the other side and I had a few 'moments' when driving to work on corners that I drive every day. It goes to show that even though the tyre looks absolutely fine, it's most certainly out of date in terms of performance. The MOT tester who drove it to the test and swapped the spare back for my normal Hankook commented that it was like night and day on the two journeys. He was surprised at the difference in grip levels, even though the OEM Conti tyre had about twice the tread left over the Hankook.

Remember new tires still have the release spray on them anyways so would take 50-100 miles anyways for them to grip ;)

I'll give it a pop and see how it goes :)

EDIT just re-read and you said you ran it for 2 weeks.... I'll try it see if i can save £100 and if its poop i'll ditch it :)

Just had a browse online and manufacturers guarantee is 6 year lifespan.... Got to find the date on mine but id guess it will be an 05 tire

Will try it out though :)

I scanned the text and saw the word ditch. That's where mine nearly put me. Mind you, I should have modified my drving style really...
