Uh oh.

Featured Replies

Have a slight problem. Was driving over to the parents this morning to pick up the bike and go for a little spin(bike is in the garage) and got an orange engine light come on. Rang a mate and told me the errors I cleared from the ecu last Monday might be just coming up again.

So went of on the bike. Came back. And started driving back home. Noticed car being really sluggish. No power. Mpg dropped drastically and the asp light came on.

Any recommendations?

Not sure if the photos uploaded as using tapatalk on iPhone. But it's just pictures of the dash incase it didn't.

Did you turn the traction control off or when the light came on did it pop up?

Possibly the MAF or a Coil pack

Unplug the maf and see if there is any change in the engine note... if not then its not the maf then try the same with each coil pack. Ideally you need to scan the car and get us the fault code. The EML lights stands for many faults.

Never touched the traction control. Pressed it when it came up to see if it'd turn off but it didn't.

Now. Maf. Where do I find that and what's it look like. Not mechanically minded. That's what friends are for lol. Unfortunately he lives 50 miles away.

Right side of the engine bay is your battery then a box above that is your air box. follow it up and there is a plastic module attached to it, this is the MAF. There is an electrical plug on top of it, quite easy to spot. If you unplug it and it sounds lumpy, the maf is fine. If you unplug it and nothing happens then you go on to the coil packs, left to right. Just listen to see if the engine note changes.

If its not them then it will be a vac line if its a turbo.

le MAF

I presume you meant to tell him, if he unplugs the maf and nothing changes then that the problem.... ;-)

Rather than guessing just get the fault codes read off.

The guy with the machine lies about 50 miles away and im broke at the moment lol.

So let me get this right. if i unplug the MAF and it doesnt get worse, the MAF is faulty. If it does get worse the MAF is fine and its to do with the coil pack?

Get a cable off ebay and download vcds lite from the Rosstech site, its free

what type of cable. will come in handy in the future. and does it connect to laptop?

anything out there to connect to iPad or anything?

Arh, an apple use - no wonder you are broke :giggle:

In reality your best bet is a USB cable to connect to a Windows based laptop running vagcom/vcds (from ross tech). there are Bluetooth interfaces which can be plugged in and I think there are some Android apps, but I am not not versed in that area.

If you unplug the MAF and it gets better then the MAF is the problem.

As said check the coilpacks too, if you unplug any one of them and the engine doesn't sound any different then there is a problem with that particular coil pack.

Ok. Well didn't use the car at all yesterday. Got back into her this morning and it seemed fine. No traction control light. Just the engine light. Mpg was normal. No sluggishness. No idea whats happened.

Unplugged the MAF earlier and nothing happened other than the traction light coming on.

Haven't had a chance to unplug the coils yet. As they seem hard to get to and Its lashing out.

Yup. Apple all the way lol.

Bought a cable from eBay anyway. Just awaiting delivery now.

Ok downloaded vcds lite and have the cable. but when i select Autoscan and select skoda octavia I it scans for about 5 min and then nothing happens. doesn't give me any codes or anything. The engine light came on there about an hour ago so i said i'd give this a try as cable only arrived tomorrow. Any suggestions?

I had the same/similar thing with mine. Found it to be the brake pedal switch.

Have you tested the connection to the car is ok?

The best way to do a fault code scan is to go into control modules, then engine, then fault codes.

  • Author

Yeah tested it. COM4. then saved it. I've selected control module finder (to see what that does) and its been scanning away the last 10 min

Auto scan doesn't work with vcds lite, you have to go into each item to check for codes

Still didn't work. Think I'll just hold off and buy the proper system when I've a bit of spare cash lol
