rSAP support with Ice Cream Sandwich

Featured Replies

Just upgraded my Samsung Galaxy S2 with the latest Android OS update. It appears

that Samsung no longer support rSAP protocol. Is anyone else having a problem and what

possible solution might their be?

I think the solution will be to change to HFP if you have a Superb that supports it. I updated my HTC Sensation yesterday to ICS 4.0.3 and HFP is working fine for me to pair my phone with the car.

We will see more and more Android phones not supporting rSAP is it a very technology and has poor support on multi core Android phones.

Hi. Hpoom. All is good with HFP. Quite right though. rSAP is old tech now. And much Android development is not supporting the protocol anymore. Thanks.

You can still upgrade your ICS with rsap via www.android-rsap.com. I will probably do the same thing. They've even got a special forum section about the Galaxy S2.

Mine also stopped working after the ICS update, well annoyed :wall: since that was why I chose this phone.

Followed this root tutorial (really simple, easy and quick) to root the phone

http://forum.xda-dev...d.php?t=1501719

and installed the android rSAP app, took less than half an hour including reading about it and testing it!!

I had previously used this with an HTC Desire and my Skoda_BT. Fortunately I had already purchased the app so it didn't cost me a bean. Works a treat. Happy again.

how do we know if our Columbus unit supports HFP, is there an easy way to check

It's your bluetooth module which is usually located under the passenger seat that needs to be GSMIII+ to work using HFP. You would need to look up the part number for GSMIII+ & then see what yours is.

or try connecting a phone that doesn't have rsap is probably the quickest and easiest method. Every phone has HFP.

Hi folks.

Just to update. Everything appears to be working fine with HFP. My phone is still under warranty so won't root just at the moment. Only thing I have noticed is that not all of my contacts are downloading. When updating list via Columbus I am only getting 80 of 93 contacts. Is there a limit? or perhaps I need to mess around with settings.

Neil, I cannot be sure of the problem but I have had problems in the past with Google contacts crashing the cars system while downloading the phonebook. I assume that the maxidot in you car says 80 of 93 as it trys to download the contacts. Perhaps check to see if you have Google contacts on your phone and try backing them up and deleting them.

As far as the limit goes I don't know if there is one but I have close to 200 contacts and they all download to the car okay.

From what I read about the root method because you don't need to flash a ROM you can unroot and Samsung would never know if you had cause to make a warranty claim. I must say that I am very much less than an expert on this though. I took the chance with mine because rSAP is so superior to HFP and I prefer to use rSAP.

Just Delved onto the GSM III, and you need as model year 11 or newer car to use HFP (Premium GSM III+)

Damn, I have an 09, so it lookslike rooting my Samsung and getting Android RSAP unless Samsung change their minds quickly

Ok so I took the plunge and rooted my phone using the above instructions. Appears to now be running rsap !! Will try and connect to the car tonight.

My Octavia is a 59 plate - For those with older bluetooth units there are loads to threads about updating the box under the seat to a later version that works on both hfp and rsap - I did this 18 months ago and it cost abot £90. So easy you wouldnt believe it. Skoda assured me it was impossible........

So how did it go? I hated it when I could only use HFP, I like the full funtionality of rSAP.

RSAP is so much better in many ways, I am surprised its been dropped. The car becomes the phone, rather than simply a glorified headset. The results are better call quality because RSAP uses the aerial on the roof of the car, rather than the phones aerial, you can read text messages on the maxidot and a whole lot more. HFP mode can be quiet limiting and what you get depends on your handset.

RSAP is very recent tech in comparison to HFP mode which has been around since the advent of Bluetooth headsets.

Yup - connected to car with Rsap straight away ! Result - so thanks VRS DSG. My wife laughs at me but when I can have the functionality of rsap I want it - the fact texts can be read out, or replies typed on the screen, and that reception is always 4 or 5 bars coz as you say the car is the phone.

Hi dtriggs,

No need to thank me......thank the clever people at xda and Android rSAP who developed the root method and the app. I'm just the messenger :hi: It was a guy on this forum that helped me root and install rSAP on my first Android phone, it's good to be able to help others.

My wife is pretty understanding about these things and agrees with me that if you have the technology available it's only natural to want to use it to it's full potential!

Happy motoring

I tried this as recomended but can't seem to get past the 'install zip from SD card' not sure what I am doing wrong, maybe I have not installed the CWM.zip file on my SD card correctly, any ideas?

Cheers

It could be that you are installing the file in the wrong location. Can you find the file in the recovery mode? Make sure you save the zip files to external SD as the phones internal storage isn't accessible in recovery mode.

Hope this helps.

Yes, I can see the file in recovery mode no problem as it appears I think second down in the list, I also tried saving the file to SD card but when I did it was not visible (not external SD!)

How did you save the file in the first place as this may be my problem, I saved via card reader as the file as this was the only way to make it visible in recovery, or so I thought?

If you want to go through PM that's fine with me as not to choke up the thread :)

I'm not sure what the problem is now? Are you saying the files are there when you're in recovery but when you choose apply update from SD card and choose cwm.zip nothing happens?

PS I tried pm but I'm using my mobile and it doesn't make it easy.

Exactly, I can see the file in either SD or external SD, when I try to access the file in recovery (when saved in external SD) it's there, only when I try to install from there it won't allow it! If i save to SD only I can't see the file, iv'e tried both.

Very puzzling and very frustrating.

Cheers

Is there an error message or anything? Are you selecting the file properly in the recovery mode? I can't remember off the top of my head what button selects files. Sorry if this is teaching you to suck eggs, I'm just struggling to see what the problem could be.

I'm also trying to clean my garage at the same time after a kitchen fitter filled it with saw dust today.

No error messages, just can't move forward from that point, out of curiosity where in Hants are you?

That's strange. I'm not sure I can help with that :-(

I'm in Horndean nr Waterlooville.
