Garmin gaff

Featured Replies

spent nearly £50 on an upgrade to my 3 year old Garmin maps. Process seemed to go ok but can only see main roads and it does recognised any place names or post codes

impatiently waiting on a reply from tech support - why do I do these things on bank holidays :wall:

Frustrating...I hope you will sort it out. I had the same issue with them 3 years ago and at the end they have refunded my money. Ditched Garmin and using my Nokia phone with free map updates for life. Funny enough I have discover that Nokia maps are more accurate that Garmin. I use them almost all the time and it takes about 700MB of my Data plan for a month. This is approximately for about 10/11 hours of map use over the month.

Hi Slider,

Sorry to hear about your problems, I hope you can get it resolved/refunded this week.

Which Garmin do you have ?

I have a Nuvi 1690, 2 years old, and was thinking about buying the lifetime map updates and Nuvi safety camera database.

That would be £75 + £50 !

Maybe I woud be better off buying a Car cradle (@ £50) for my mobile phone HTC 1x and using the Satnav on that ? I think the maps and updates are free ?

The screen is as big as my Garmin's.

Good luck.

Have you tried re-installing the maps?

I bought the lifetime upgrades for my Garmin a few months back and they work fine.

Garmin devices are among the few that have rather good support from independant mappers. I suggest having a look at the maps from the OSM project: http://talkytoaster.info/ukmaps.htm

but having spent £50 on the garmin map I expect it to work!!

Have you looked in the settings on the sat nav itself. You may have insrtalled the maps, but if they are not selected in the settings, you will only see the major roads. I had this problem with my Garmin while driving in france. I was mooching around the system and unselected the maps by mistake.

I thought the unit was defective until I had another look around the device and see what I had done.

I'd check the maps selection settings too make sure.

Tried that too, but thanks for the suggestion.

All fixed, Garmin support helpful.

I had loaded the wrong map area (not enough memory to hold all of Europe) - Apparently North East Europe does not include the UK and I only needed the UK and Ireland map
