mishap with jet wash!

Featured Replies

Good afternoon

As above suggests I have just finished washing my car and then put in the garage, when I then noticed a wheel weight lying on the floor near where the back wheels are!!!!!

I did use a jet wash

Questions

What do I do?

Is it a safety issue? Or will it just effect the handling??

Andy

Not a safety issue but you need your wheel rebalancing unless you can see where it came off from

Probably just the handling - go to a tyre place and ask them to fix it back on for you unless you fancy a DIY job.

How can loosing a rear wheel weight affect the handling,.................. unless it weights about 2 ton.

Is it the ones glued on or the ones that are hammered into the side of wheel.

If hammered their must be some hint on wheel where it was attached to, so just hammer it in.

Otherwise you can always change the wheel with a rear one if this one is calibrated.

This way you will not feel vibrations on steering wheel.

Thanks for your advice

I could not believe it as it was really dirty and I thought a good snow foam would blast it all off, which it did,,, then this,,,,

It should be gone this time next week

My vrs is getting its leather put in!!!!

From t'internet:

Wheels that are not balanced or are out of balance generally produce a vibration that is uncomfortable to drive in and results in premature wearing of suspension and steering components, rotating parts and tyres. Correctly balanced wheels help to eliminate vibration and avoid premature wear caused by an imbalance in the rotating wheel and tyre assembly. The first sign that your wheels may be out of balance is when your steering wheel starts to wobble above a certain speed. The light weight of modern cars means that they don't dampen down the vibrations caused by spinning wheels in the way that older, heavier vehicles could. A driver may not always sense an imbalance at the steering wheel. It could be present with but dampened by the vehicle weight. This is why balancing is equally important for both front and rear wheels. Wheels are balanced on a wheel balancing machine. The machine rotates the tyre and wheel assembly and automatically calculates the weight and location of the balance counter weight. As a result of wheel balancing, you should notice a smoother ride and better wear from your tyres, again saving you time and money.

Thanks johno

I think they have been loose for a while as I did my type pressures this morning as I have felt the wheel wobble as described above

I will see how it is tomorrow, maybe others have fell out? I have never had this happen before, and I drive like miss daisy!!!!

I managed to remove a few wheel weights from my alloys a few months back, a couple of 5 grams and a 10 gram I think.

They came off when I stuffed the sponge through the spokes.

Not noticed any side effects in the last 7,000 miles, although my alloys are getting refurbed in a few weeks so will be rebalanced then.

Iv a few marks on my alloys too ;( it's hard keep it 100% tho so I try not worry as much as I used too.

Mine are pretty bad, deep gouges a good third of the way up a few of the spokes, all four rims badly scuffed and a few of them are bubbling up under the paint too.

In think the previous owner must have lived in a tight street!

There is some yellowing in the corners of the spokes too, I'm not sure if this suggests that brake dust has been left on too long or if its a sign of an acidic wheel cleaner. If so this may help to explain the loose wheel weights?

Bit more embarassing tale. While ago ,my daughter was in habit of dropping off grand son for us to babysit, whilst she went to work. And as she car shared with pal, she'd leave car & keys at ours. I decided my car needed a bit of a wash.Once done ,I got out the jetwash to blast out the wheel arches /other places and finish off. Took one look at her car ,and decided to give it a blast to clean it up a bit, especially the no plates . It did clean them up -too well. Part of one letter had disentigrated.

The stick-on weights can be a pain. I've had the weight fly off on the way home after getting wheels balanced (on a Yaris SR). Not sure if the glue hadn't cured or the alloy hadn't been cleaned off properly but I heard it hit the wheel arch - then again it was K**k fit. Also had the stick on weights come off when power washing the wheels.

I have just been out now and maybe it's physiologic but it feels different!!?!?!

Will tell the garage and let them sort it out
