Yes, you MUST replace them. Get them from TPS or a dealer.

What is TPS? Excuse my ignorance

TPS is Trade Part Specialists. They sell VAG parts to the trade at less than dealer prices. In theory, they are trade only, but many will turn a blind eye and sell to the general public.

The Vag-com tool came up with a fault saying there was an intermitent misfire, could this point to a headgasket?

If you clear the fault, does it come back?

What is the code?

  • Author

i couldnt clear with the free version :(

Yes, you can clear the code individually, but you can't use 'clear all'.

Theoretically it could, yes. Then again, there's other possible causes. Spark plug, ignition coil.

i couldnt clear with the free version :(

Go into control module, engine, fault codes, and try clearing the codes in there. (Beaten to it above).

Hi Tim,

First I suggest you edit your post to remove the line starting TMB as it contains your VIN.

My guess is most of the errors are caused by intermittant loss of power. I suggest you try clearing them all - one by one.

You can hunt out what the codes mean on the site. http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/65535 IIRC the 65535 on the airbag controller is bad news.

Also be careful that you have included your chassis number TMBN.... you may wish to edit out.

16500 is temp sender on thermostat. I suspect the thermostat is broken internally.

17978 engine start blocked by immobiliser - I think this comes up when the battery has died and if cleared goes away.

Thanks guys, so if i get a memory controller for the airbag from a scrappy i just unplug the old and put the new in?

Is that a big job the tem sender?

Something the car does is if you run the car for 10 minutes and turn it off and then remove the coolant cap, the water all bubbles out. Does that indicate a head gasket?

Same happens on mine, and I suspect a small HG leak. On asking this on here before though, it was suggested to be normal, because the water is no longer under pressure.

The coolant has a higher boiling point because it is under pressure - if the engine is up to temp and you relieve the pressure it will spurt out. However, this should not be confused with not having bled the system properly.

EG.Always bleed the system with the heater fully on hot, to combat air locks.

I have been looking at where to buy some head bolts( is that the correct term as thats the product that comes up) and i came across this thread on here which states you can re use the bolts? He also says Haynes tells you to???

http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/158404-14-mpi-fabia-cylinder-head-gasket/

Secondly will these ones be okay? I dont know where i can find out what model of parts my car uses

Could have sworn I replied to this on Wednesday saying flush and reverse flush the coolant and spend a tenner on some G12 as the coolant pic looks a lot worse than the oil pic and once it's clean you'll then be able to check if the oil is mixing with the coolant but guess not. Also if you let it run for a few minutes on a dry area if the gasket has gone you should see water forming on the ground behind the exhaust.

Did you check if you have the revised HG on the car? If you look at the block facing the engine bay then look for a T on the right hand corner nearest you, if it's visible then you have the revised HG already.

As far as stretch bolts go I just had a quick look on ebay (OK not the most reliable source of info) and http://www.ebay.co.u...d1#ht_500wt_803 says they are stretch bolts.

I have checked and there is water coming out the exhaust and i checked the sludge in the header tank and it is oil :( . I have ordered the coolant and radiator flush but it has still not arrived, in the time though i have become almost certain its the head gasket, i would love to be proved wrong though.

Is that when it's up to temp or just when it starts up as on a morning most cars suffer with condensation forming in the back box given cold enough weather?

  • Author

When it starts up, never driven it properly as it has not MOT

I know it's not got an MOT but previously you mentioned you had driven it on the drive (up to 2nd gear) and got it up to temp, was it still kicking out moisture then? If so is it spitting liquid onto the drive?

  • Author

it is spluttering, it mainly drips though. I only drove it up the drive for about 5 minutes, the rest of the time was idling

You should see the water and steam that comes out the back of my Audi on cold startup, in certain conditions its like a smoke screen when pulling away on full throttle. Coolant levels normal, oil levels normal, no leaks. The Audi takes around 6 miles for the steam / water to burn off as I usually only do very short runs.

Steam and Water at startup is perfectly normal for a petrol engine.

Unless I'm out of date, the workshop manual doesn't mention renewing the head bolts on the 1.4 MPi. It was mentioned to me some years ago by a Skoda representative that alot of dealers would have their claims for replacement cars denied, because they were waiting for back ordered head bolts, when in fact they didn't have to be renewed.
