New MOT Requirements... 1.7 worth a look

Featured Replies

Yup, it's been known for a while and can only be a good thing.

This has already been discussed hundreds of times.

All you need to know here. If it's not in the guide, then it doesn't get tested.

Cars with xenons must have headlamp washers and self-levellers to be type approved to be sold new. Retrofitting is an entirely different matter. To pass an MoT, if self-levellers and washers are present they must work. If they're not there, they cannot be tested and so the car cannot be failed on them - just like a spare tyre.

I should know - passed an MoT with retrofitted xenons only a couple of weeks ago. No washers and levellers, but as the beam pattern is fine, they passed with no advisories.

But the regulations/manual quoted state something like 'The use of HID Xenon conversion kits is not permitted'. So there seems to be a disparity or an error in the MOT test.

MoT manual says nothing about that.

Section 1.7 of the latest MoT testers manual...

Vehicles equipped with HighIntensity Discharge (HID) or LED dipped beam headlamps may be fitted with headlamp washers and a suspension or headlamp self levelling system.

Where such systems are fitted, they must work; however, it is accepted that it may not be possible to readily determine the functioning of self levelling systems. In such cases, the benefit of the doubt must be given.

Headlamp washers may work in conjunction with the windscreen washers (when the dipped beamheadlamps are switched on) or by a separate switch.

HID lamps may be identified by:

· taking a few seconds to reach full intensity

· having a bluish tinge to the light

· having an igniter module/inverterbehind the headlamp

· having ‘DCR’ marked on theheadlamp lens.

HID headlamps use high voltage and extra care should be taken when inspecting these items

That's because it's not in the MOT manual, it's C&U. After-market HID kits won't be type-approved.
