Do I Change My Tyres?

Featured Replies

I am off to Pod tomorrow and was wondering what people think?

I currently have 4mm on the front and 6mm on the back. I'm still looking to get a couple of Semi Slick tyres BUT I am going to have to do more motorway miles going forward so not sure how long the Federal 595RS-R's will last if I go for x4 of them.

Currently looking at a set of UNIROYAL RAINSPORT 2 215-40-17s fully fitted at £420.00, reckon it will be worthwhile or I should run the currents for a while longer?

Swap the fronts with the back, your get a bit more life from them.

That's what I was thinking to get the last bit of life out of them, just wasn't sure if it would be better to change now

From what I've read, 4mm is the minimum recommended for winter driving, and the legal limit iirc is 1.6mm, I would change when the front gets under 3mm.

Only if you like taking off tyres that still have a fair bit of life in them. :)

The backs have probably only worn down by 2mm.

3mm is the time to replace IMO for the road

Just as a point on the wear rates. The std Continental tyres have treadwear rating of 280, whereas the Federal 595RSRs and Toyo R1Rs have a treadwear rating of only 140. So at a rough gues id expect them to last about haf the distance of the Contis. Could be worse, R888s have a treadwear rating of 100. More grip = less life.

Id look at a set of the Goodyear Eagle F1 Assymetric 2 tyres. Newly released and given very good ratings in tests and reviews. The older ones even took trackdays in their stride with no issues. Last time i checked they were pretty cheap as well

Id agree with that. My contis had about 2-3mm left above the wear markers but they had no grip at all

I've just pit rainsports on the family Mazda 5. Dry grip about the same as previous dunlop sports, but they feel so much better in damp or wet conditions also much less tyre noise. Defo recommend them

Im looking at changing the front to those fancy named tires sy mentioned as there fairly cheap and get good reviews :)

Before i had those Vredestein Sessatas i had Toyo T1Rs which i had used for about 15 laps of the ring over the weekend. The weather was around 35degrees and they just massively overheated and were terible. Really hated them and sold them with nearly 6mm of tread. The next weekend I changed them to the sessantas and drove the 92 mile to the ring and they were already massively grippier than the toyos and continued to get better. No issues with heat or understeer at all. AND they lasted ages. Id happily get them again as a road/light track tyre. Not sure what they would be like as a track tyre though, never tried them for that.

Think youv convinced me to get them sy.....although tbf i hadnt heard of them untill i see them in a magazine i read at lunch today

They seem to perform from all the tests on par with the good year eagle F1, Michelin PS2 etc but at a reduced premium. They were a very popular tyre on the Mk5gti forum.
