Engine Management System

Featured Replies

Hello,

Recently brought an Elegance. Driven it about 75 miles and the Engine Management light has come on. No restrictions have been applied by the on board computer.

Took it to a dealership the said it's likely to have tripped the computed because it's been sat on a forecourt with a flat battery, so they re-set it and off I went.

15 miles later the Engine light comes on again.

Could a problem with the head gasket be causing this? I aks because there was some thick gunky stuff on the oil filler cap, but the dealer who sold me the car had it pressure tested and the head gasket was fine, it's likely to be condensation from it being stood around a bit.

But back to the engine managment system.... any idea's?

Cheers

Badger.

Any idea's

Reject the car.

You didn't mention which engine you have, but my advice would be to go to a Skoda dealer and tell them to stick the car on their diagnostic equipment and tell you what the fault code is - when the light comes on, it will log a fault in the system. Failing that, find a friendly local Briskodian with VAG-COM who can do the same.

The thick gunk on the filler cap may implicate one of the coolant/temperature sensors, but several members are running round with something similar with no problems. First stop, see why the car thinks it's got a fault :D

It's a 1.4 16v engine.

Took the car to the Skoda dealer who ran the diagnosis and he mentioned it may be the coolant temprature sensor, but also stated that the fault code indicated a fuel injector timing problem (is this serious? I only have a limited knowledge of cars.)

Told the garage who i brought it from who said they'll have it back and fix it.

My initial reaction to the gunk on the filler cap was the head gasket, but it's been pressure tested and there are none of the usual signs like oil in the coolant bottle, or reduced performance/overheating etc...

Trouble is that it's a cracking little car and although I've only had it three days I thoroughly enjoy driving it in comparison to my old Renault Laguna 2.0s RTI.

Hi Badger,

I had this on my Furby after a few hundred miles from new. Dealers checked it and reset the system. A week later it happened again. This time they diagnosed a defective sensor (sorry no idea which one). It was replaced and I've had no more problems.

I know the coolant temp sensor seems to be a favourite for failing on the Octy and as far as I know, several members are running with them being faulty with no problems. However, the injector problem sounds a bit more serious, but I'm no expert. Best bet would be to give the supplying garage the chance to fix it and then take it back to the Skoda dealer for a diag-check and see if it has been fixed :)

You might also want to get a few quotes from the Skoda dealer for fixing it as well as the parts needed, so you can make sure the supplying garage have fixed the right bit :D

IT may be just a rear brake bulb gone.

No offence but you've done 75 miles and you are having issues , sounds like a Fiat to me, I would ask for a replacement!

I'm assuming it's a 2nd hand car so finding a replacement may not be very easy. The car will come with a 3 month parts and labour warranty and does sound easily fixable. I would give them a chance and then if they are unable to resolve it in a reasonable timeframe, reject it..........
