Vrs tdi slight hesitation pd170

Featured Replies

I was driving home tonight and on 2 roundabouts went around them in 3rd gear gave it a blast on and when I went into 4th gear I got slight hesitation for about 2 seconds and then fine?

The second time I was at say 40mph constant in 4th gear and when I put down the shoe I got them same hesitation for a second or 2 , didn't do it after that.

Funny thing was I was very low on diesel too, range on trip was 40km left.

I'm thinking fuel filter maybe as its due one or the fact it was so low on diesel.

Iv heard of someone else having this on a 140 but he was also low on fuel.

Anyone ever have this?

Not experienced it myself, but I wonder if it could be due to a sudden drop in pressure on the low pressure pick-up side of the fuel pump when the car surges forward, without the benefit of the static pressure of a full fuel tank?

If that is something like what your experiencing then as said in that thread it could be just your DPF doing a regeneration. If it doing it on a regular basis like mine is then you can attempt to clean it at the dealership and hope that works or take it out.

As for the fuel filter theory, as i said in the above thread mine has FSSH but when i bought it on 53k it still had the original fuel filter in so it will do no harm in changing it and it will most likely need it anyways :)

No it's not a regular thing it only done it about twice in 3 months, prob just caught it during a regen, my car never puts on the dpf light.

All depends on how they are driven to how often the DPF light will come up. Mine never used to do it at all till i had some 'work' done  so mine is a rather rare case of the DPF on its last legs

Sorry to bump and old thread up.

I get a hesitation when I am accelerating hard happening between 3500-4000 revs.

I've had the car a month, it's got over 100k on the clock.

Not sure if it's had this injector recall, not sure if I want it done either after reading some of ths issues it's caused. I'm not sure if the DPF has been deleted or not.

Any ideas?

Cheers

a blocked EGR valve is a common issue.

Mine used to stutter, especially when booting it untill I had the egr mapped out

Well the car was hooked up to VCDS other night and came back with a EGR restriction or something.

So I looked today.

Is this right? Wasn't dire if someone tried to blank it off or something?

Some one has previously fitted a reduced size gasket (from a mk3 SEAT diesel) in order to reduce the amount of exhaust gas being recirculated through your engine

I have just fitted the same gasket to mine. In theory this should mean more clean air is drawn in by the engine and it should run better, rather than chewing on exhaust gas.

I'd leave that gasket in there. It should help reduce stutter

Next step - clean your EGR valve and intake manifold (including swirl flaps)

Ok, big job I think. So the EGR is this?

Yes. The bottom part is the ASV.

Ive already gone through this on mine about a year ago... poss due to do it again!! its a bit of a pain in the arse and be prepared no matter how good you are to get covered in crap!!!

one bit of advice, the pipe that routes off to the right of the engine from the EGR is bolted on to the engine block over the right hand side of the engine... you need to remove this to get enough movement on the EGR pipe to get it out of the way of the bolt holding the EGR to the manifold..

Thanks for that, yes I saw that bolt tucked right in there and was hoping that I didn't have to touch it.

I think I'll keep half a day free to do this. Did it on my BM 320D no problem at all but this just looks more hassle :(

It took my days to figure out about that bolt !

If memory serves, you only need to loosen it slightly to get the bracket to move over enough.

Took me a while too!! no one mentioned it at all but christ it made life easier!!!   Although you can just loosen it, i found it still wasnt quite enough so ended up removing the whole thing..

Top tip for putting it back though, use some tissue paper to pad out your socket set enough that the bolt doesnt drop back into it leaving you little thread to work with, then once you have done it loosely tape it in place with insulating tape that way you dont drop it down into the engine bay... once you have it in and started to tighten you can just pull it off and the tape will come away!! job done and you havent lost the bolt 4 times and nearly resorted to taking the bottom engine cover off!!! (thank god i had a magnetic pickup tool)

Once its all off the job is easy... just remember once you unplug that electrical connector on the side of the EGR, do not turn the ignition on, otherwise you will end up buggering yourself and have to use VCDS from memory to get it all sorted again.. (ONLY TURN ON ONCE ITS CONNECTED BACK UP AGAIN AND PLUMBED IN) :-)

Last tip, latex gloves and lots of swarfeega or however its spelt!!! or barrier cream and the carbon crap doesnt move off your hands easy..

Is there any specific or handy tool to use to get the bolts behind the EGR?

I mainly use this for my tinkering

Doesnt look a million miles away from all you need!! As long as you have the Torx Bits you'll be able to get it all undone with little fuss.... use the small thin extended bar on the socket to help reach it but other than that its 20 mins max to get it off...

Cheers, may do this weekend :)
