Gear trouble

Featured Replies

In my Ford Transit Connect i can't get into reverse gear while the engine is running. So if i want to reverse i have to turn the engine off and then engage reverse and then turn the engine back on to start reversing.

I need help as i have not got a clue.

Could be a clutch issue, doubt its a issue with the selection cables as it goes in when the engine is switched off, what age is it & how many miles has the van done?

The van is a 2007 plate with 89000 on the clock

If it's got a hydraulic clutch, then it's worth changine the clutch fluid (Often brake fluid).

Potentially also worth a gearbox oil change and getting any linkeages adjusted.

Beyond that, things start getting more expensive to check and replace.

Will it work if you double de clutch?

Got a phone call from my garage saying they can get a recon engine from Ford so brilliant. But it will cost me £2100 for gearbox, new clutch and fitting.

Does this sound about right.

How much!!!! £2100 for a gearbox supplied & fitted is maddness........id either fit a secondhand gearbox or get your own recon,d by a transmisson specialist. The vans only worth £3k to £4k max. It may just need a new reverse gear & some bearings,to be honest it sounds like a clutch issue to me,if the box is knackered it wouldnt go into reverse at all,the fact it does when you switch it off says to me the clutch isnt clearing,im not 100% sure but i dont think these have syncro on reverse hence it been difficult to select & going in when you switch it off.

The thing is i haven't got time to look around as i am trying to do a day's work, so i will have to bear the brunt of getting a box from Ford.

There is no way id spend that kinda money on a gearbox for a connect, shame you cant get a 2nd opinion from another garage/transmission guy as i think your getting a fast one pulled on you, anyway, its your money, hope you get it sorted.

I am loosing too much money with the van stuck there.

Call a couple of specialists as they should be able to get one pdq to you for a lot less.

If they can't get one same day delivered, then you have to make the costs call on ford.
