MOT worries

Featured Replies

I've got a couple of niggley bits about my car and I hope it will pass its MOT next Wednesday. Trh issues

Airbag warning light is on possible control unit issue

Lower arm bushes have some play in them

Rear left calliper had ceased but had been fixed

Any ideas if these are failures or advisories??

Cheers chaps

Mike

Airbag warning light is on possible control unit issue - this will be a fail

Lower arm bushes have some play in them - depends on what the tester classes as too much play, if its not too bad then it will be an advise

Rear left calliper had ceased but had been fixed - if its been sorted then will be ok as long as it reads ok on the brake roller tester

Airbag light will deffo fail it, the other two depend on how bad they are, why not take it for an mot a month before its due then you have a month to fix said items if you really need that long.

The airbag light is not presently a fail, as above for the other items.

My mot isn't due till may 10th so 2 and a bit weeks. With regards to the airbag light skoda says there's nothing wrong. And they are fine?? So I'm puzzled why the light is still on??

Get someone with VCDS / VAGCOM to scan the controller for faults for another opinion. Generally if the light is on then something is up.

Airbag light will come up on the mot as an advisory at the moment, with a brief passage saying, its a advisory at present, soon to become a failure, you might as well get the other bits done, your going to have to at some point anyway?

Lol I've covered the light over with PVC tape

I recall it being discussed at work in the garage between mot testers and techs about some of the possible new rules, one of them being somthing along the lines of "when you turn the key, all the bulbs need to light up and then clear with no warning lights left on"

The "all the bulbs need to light up" was to avoid people going "hmmm.... if my car will fail because of this bright red stop warning... ima just pull the bulb out and it'll pass!"

Dont know how true this is or anything, just letting you know by covering the light up with tape, it wont make it pass either way :)

With some cars things like the ABS lights don't go off unless the engine is started.

If you know the bushes need doing then either pay someone else to do them or do them yourself, fitting a set of Powerflex bushes is quick and easy not to mention comparatively cheap. As for the air bag situation it's not a fail yet but it will be sooner or later, i'd personally want that resolved irrespective, you want to know they'll work when you need them.

Always a good tip to get MOT done 2 weeks or more before 'due date' so you are not pushed against a date when old MOT expires.

What can happen is you pay over the odds just because you're in a hurry!

Another tip is to NOT have the coldest part of the year to MOT your car, it's much better to be doing the repairs at a warmer time of year. I know you can 'waste' several months of your MOT but spring is definitely a better time than winter to fix it.

Agree.. My mot is due in around 2 weeks but have it booked in for tomorrow. I know Its going to fail.

I did plan to do the jobs today. Only needed brake pads done and reverse light sensor. So I went out in the rain and decided lets get it done pulled off the passenger side wheel noticed the disk needs replacing and I have been sent the wrong brake pads.. So gave up before I started..

Plus lets see if it fails on anything else :)

The car past it's MOT today with an advisory.

Front exhaust has a minor leak of exhaust gases [7.1.2]

How big a job is this??? Oh and the EML came on with an O2 sensor but has been cleared and so far hasn't come on. Is this normal??

So did you swap the controller for the air-bag and do the bushes or just chance it? As to the leak it depends on exactly where it's leaking from.

I just chanced it I coverd the airbag led with black tape. Lol they scanned for error codes and the only error code was for the O2 sensor so slightly puzzled

Both sound potentially related. Fix the exhaust and hopefully the other will go away.
