Car locking when the boot is open!

Featured Replies

Hi i have a 2002 skoda octavia, i have recently noticed that when i unlock the car with the keyfob and open the boot the car locks its self. i know that as a saftey feature that if you unlock the car and dont open a door within 20/30 seconds then the car locks itself again incase you unlocked it by mistake. so i can only assume that the car is not regestering that the boot has been opened does anyone know what the problem is and how to fix it.? I want this fixing as i know i will need to put something in the boot put the keys down in the boot while doing this forget and shut the boot. and bam locked out.

There is a microswitch which detects wether the boot is open or not. Not sure where it is on the MK1 however.

As part of your diagnosis, when you open the driver's door, does the car recognise it is open? i.e. door open symbol on dash pod, interior light comes on, red/white door open light at bottom of door card, lights on warning buzzer working? You may find that the problem lies with the door lock mechanism on the drivers door rather than the boot itself. Had a slightly different problem on a Fabia, boot wouldn't unlock using the key fob until I replaced the drivers door lock mechanism which houses three microswitches as Mannyo indicates, controlling different aspects of the car's locked/unlocked state, so although the bootlid may seem unrelated to the drivers door, there would appear to be a link in the workings of the central locking. Seems to me your car is not recognising the boot has opened and so is relocking itself after 30 seconds. If above issues with the drivers door apply, then do some internet searching for door lock repairs for VWs - same set up for Skodas.

I have same problem, but all of the above works. light in door, buzzer red door indicator on dash. have checked connections in door, no corrosion whatsoever. but my red light and deadlock for drivers door has packed up. but the issue with boot was there before this.

It's normal so be very careful where you leave your keys!

There is a microswitch in the lock assembly in the tailgate on the mk1 I believe. This will have probably failed, or the cam which drives it will have worn.

I had this problem on me old Cordy. never bothered doing anything about it, just got into the habit of only having the keys in my right back pocket, or in the ignition.

However, today, i unlocked and got into the Octy. made a quick call with the key just stuck in the ignition, and the doors all relocked! I have a sneaking suspicion i may incubating electrical gremlins... I hope to jeezus im wrong!!!

It is normal for many MK1s.

If the boot is locking/unlocking with the remote and boot light comes on when it should, then it is unlikely to be a fault as both switches are working.

Boot locks/unlocks with the remote but no interior light.

If you use the key in the boot lock, does it lock/unlock all the doors?

cant say i have tried. I will go check now.

Our Survey says

OK, you definately have a problem. I will look at the diagrams tomorrow, but my guess is that a bad earth connection at the lock is the problem

Cheers.

Check out the brown wire from the tailgate lock switch. The same earth wire feeds both the switch to the central locking and the luggage compartment light.
