knocking sound whilst braking felicia 1.3

Featured Replies

been getting an anoying knockin from front drivers side for a few months, ive just replaced brake lines on this side and put new pads on the front, the pads where worn very uneven on the drivers side the outer one was almost bare to the bone, the inner 3/4 life left,i thought it might be a problematic disc so i swapped discs on the front from drivers to passenger, but problem still remains ive cleaned the calipers where the pads sit with sandpaper and greased up the pins...its doing my head in ,if anything the knocking is even worse now since overhaul, maybe its not the brakes at all ...but knocking only comes, when breaking and more pronounced the faster the car and the harder the braking....help

Well, you have two problems.

First: Since the brake liners wear unevenly even after trying both brake discs is indicating that pressure is greater on the outer pad, check that the brake caliper is free to move sideways evenly and equally at both pins, the upper and the lower. Then have the hub bearing inspected for wear because when it wears enough the braking force will not be equal on both sides of the brake disc.

Second: i guess the knocking whilst braking is caused by badly worn lower arm rubber bushes or a worn shock absorber rubber top mount. Also, check the steering arms for play.

Good luck

thanks for your reply raedalbandak ,i ordered a caliper rebuild kit this morning from skoda for 16 euro, which consists of a couple of seals and a piston, not that i am convinced that this will solve the problem..grasping at straws now at this stage...car was in for the n.c.t the irish mot, so i guess it should have picked up on bushes, steering arms etc , maybe not the shock absorber top mount ,not sure how i would check that for wear...caliper seems to move fine, and ive done the wheel bearing test

My missus took her 6N polo for the NCT shortly after buying it last year and it failed on tracking which was just outside the limits. The car had brand new front tyres (should've smelt a rat). Had the tracking done and got a pass on retest. A few months later a knocking started to appear. I had a check around and couldn't find anything obvious apart from the front tyres were badly worn towards the inside, figuring knackered bushes, we changed the wishbones (complete with all new bushes and ball joints) and had the tracking done again. This put an end to the knocking, so it's worth checking. Tracking cost 45 euro. She says the knocking was most evident when braking and taking tight turns at slow speed. Good luck and let us know how you get along.
