Went for a spin in an UP! the other day.

The Yeti was in for a service and the dealer, who sells VW and Skoda, have a demonstrator. Only out for 15 minutes or so but immediately struck by the engine note. Never driven a three cylinder before so came as a surprise. I've never driven a Porsche either but kind of imagine what it might sound like and the UP! put me in mind of that....sporty sounding and thrummy - difficult to describe but very distinctive. Certainly not a silky smooth luxury feel to the engine but it was 'interesting'..... not exactly harsh or buzzy but you knew it was there and it probably likes to be used with enthusiasm. I imagine youngsters would take to it. Certainly nippy enough for most purposes given it's intended use. 70 mph on the clock equated to 3000rpm and without referring to the GPS (which wasn't turned on) difficult to know what the true road speed really was, but not miles out. Would have preferred to drive the Skoda....available soon though. Prefer the interior and would want 5 doors. VW's will be many months before turning up, according to the dealer, whereas the Skoda will be available in weeks not months. I quite liked it...appeared solid enough, controls all tight and pleasant to use and like a VW. The gearbox felt perfectly positive and wasn't overly low geared. Would have liked the seat to have raised higher but most would find it OK I'm sure. I'm comparing it to my Hyundai i10 and I would sooner have the VW myself based on just a short drive. Certainly worth taking one out for a drive if the chance arises.

I think each dealer is being allocated either 8 or 10 Citigos at launch to demo or sell as they please so there should be some about before the main orders come through. With that and the Rapid it's going to be an interesting year.

We're looking at one tomorrow :)

How was it?

Really, really good! Very impressed with the whole car - willing little engine, sounds really good, comfy seats, lots of room inside (I'm 6'1" and can sit behind myself) boot is a good size, well spec'd.

On PCP works out cheaper to get the White/Black rather than spec up a lower model. I really can't see Skoda competing on monthly cost on PCP!

11-12 weeks factory delivery time, too. So maybe your dealer was trying to get you to buy a Citigo as you'll end up paying more over 3 years? ;)

We got our finance figures for the Citigo today:

3 door Elegance in non metallic paint +convenience pack(cruise control, parking sensors and dash temp readout etc.)

£9470 OTR.

£1000 deposit=35 payments of £162.13p

Final payment £4590.

For comparison we were quoted for a VW Moveup (mid spec.) with nav pack and convenience pack

£9694 OTR.

£1000 deposit=35 payments of £164.54p

Final payment£4316.40p

The Skoda also has the nav pack, alloys, and Greentech as standard,so only 96gm/co2.

Both have 3 years free servicing.

I think we'll be choosing the.............

Tax is only £20 on the up! so it doesn't really matter.

All the figures I looked at were for a maximum deposit (30%), so that'll change things. Strange that Skoda themselves reckon the Citigo will be worth more... up! White was nearly £6000 MFV.

Really interesting to see those figures. Based on the additional spec of the Skoda, this seems to be the better deal?

Looking at the couple of figures for the end residual, it does not neccessarily reflect depriciation. If you do have a higher GFV at the end, your payments will be lower, BUT you will have more to find at the end, and vice versa with a lower residual.

For instance if you do want to change your car every 3 years you would be better having a lower residual as this will then give you more equity against the future car.

PCP's can be juggled around with either a slightly higher residual or a very low residual.

I got figures for the 5 door today.

Same spec as the 3 door above,

£164.41 with a final figure of £4882.

That's just over £2 a month more than the 3 door.Seems good value to me.

Tried an Up! the other day. Very nice car and I loved the 16" classic wheels on the Up White. Unfortunately, there just isn't enough room between the back seat and the back of the front seat for me to fit in our child seat on its isofix base with the seat back far enough for the car to be drivable for me (I'm 6'8"). Could maybe get one in a few years when he's bigger and that's not a consideration. With the front seat all the way back there was bags of room in it for me.

You're not exactly "average height" are you? ;)

Are these PCP figures based on the 60ps or the more powerful one? Also, what rate if interest was it?

The 60 ps Greentech with 7.9% and 3 years free servicing.

The VW UP was also 7.9% free servicing ,but not the Greentech(Bluemotion?)

Nope! It's annoyingly limiting when it comes to choice of cars. It's why I ended up buying a mk2 Octavia tbh. I think if we have another kid I might just have to bite the bullet, flog the octavia and get a superb.

Only means you don't pay £20 a year tax. Hardly worth shouting about!

I know the feeling - which is why I was really surprised with the room in the back when the drivers seat is adjusted for me!

You're right Babs ,I'm not shouting about it, but I'd rather have the £20 in my pocket.

Maybe get 1 or 2 mpg as well, and come resale time I know which will be a bit more desirable.

If you want the Bluemotion you have to pay VW several hundred pounds more.

With Skoda it's included in the price.

Oficially the Greentec version gets about 4.5MPG more than standard.

In the real world, you wont see any of the figures quoted officialy.

Got my copy of What Car yesterday, and they review the 5 door Citigo Greentech against the Pug 107. They really liked the Citigo, and their conclusion contains the words 'arguably better than the Up' (their small car of the year). Good to see such a positive remark from a mag that seems to love VWs!

I have just been to visit a Skoda dealer, and got myself a brochure and some PCP quotes whilst there;

5 Door Elegance 75ps Green Tech with entertainment pack and safety pack in non metallic at £188 per mont hover 36 months, or £174 over 42 months. This was based on a deposit of £500.

I also got quotes based on having the convenience pack include don top of the above spec, which came in at £182 per month, or £198 per month on either 42/36 months PCP's... All of these included the 3years servicing.

Wasn't offered anything special on a part ex, and I was told discount is out of the question on such a new car. I find that hard to believe to be honest...

Their sales pitch was based on the fact that they could get me one quicker than I could an Up!

5 door elegance ordered today.

told to expect delivery end july beginning of august, but could be earlier....No we don't believe it either.

Great, what options/colour did you go for? Did you go for the 60ps?

It's a random little engine, the oil filter is on the sump and the exhaust manifold is part of the cylinder head.

Yeah I noticed that, Ross!
