Argh! Misfiring, Engine Light, Power down

Featured Replies

Hi folks,

I've had a morning from hell, and was just wondering if anyone could help give me an idea what this fault could be, before I entrust the car with a garage;

Driving this morning and the car suddenly started running on only 3 cylinders, really bad vibration etc, also engine warning light flashing, and power massively down.

My friend put it on a diagnostic and it confirmed a misfire on cylinder 2 ..... unfortunately he then had to dash.

Is this likely to be coil pack failure ? I don't really know much about coil packs so any advice would be great.

How much would you say I am looking at if it is the coil pack?

It's a 2001 Octavia VRS 1.8T 180hp, Mk1

Thanks

Cheers gents,

Ok, my mate has come back and confirmed 2 coil pack failures. They're not the originals so it's not a recall job but he can get the 2 coils for £20 each + VAT (obviously cheapies for now), and can fit them in 2 mins. Phew!

All fixed! ....... thanks gents. The symptoms were so severe that it just felt like an expensive problem!; over the moon to have the car running perfectly again for £50 all in. :)

[EDIT: No it's not, another coil has gone... see below!]

Cheers Jase, but I desperately needed the car fixing today, as we're down to one car, and I need to travel somewhere early in the morning. So I got a couple of cheap one from the local parts place.

My buddy fitted the 2 new coils and tested the car ; they held out fine but another one of the originals has gone! ..... the parts place has no more in stock but getting 2 new ones for me at 3.30pm.... They must have all been really ready to go. Will have 4 new ones on by the end of the day so fingers crossed my baby will be running healthily again!

I trust the fella that's looking at the car, but can there be any other root cause for coil packs breaking so close together in time? ..... I'm just worried that there's something else wrong in the background that's causing 3 coils to fail more or less at the same time?

Cheers.

Well..... 4 brand new Coil Packs, an extended test drive, and she's running beautifully, so very happy! :)

If you think about it all the coil packs are independant parts, so if one lasts say 7-8 years its likely the others will be on there last legs so to say

Cheers Jase.

Latest update > Car is running sweet as a whistle, but the engine warning light is on. I am wondering if this is on as a result of the coil pack failures / replacement, or if it's maybe the temp sensor fault, or something more grizzly!

Is there a 'fudge' to turn the engine light off of these cars, or is that just a VAG-COM job ? ......... Not to bury my head in the sand; I just wanted to put it off to see if / how quickly it comes back.

Cheers.

Cheap code scanner can clear it.£20 or less from eBay. Worth buying anyway as you'll save yourself money in the long run over taking it to a garage every time a light pops up.

Or get a cable and download vcds lite

If you have an android phone get a Bluetooth thingy and get the torque app works well

Thanks to you both; going to order a cheap code reader, as heard engine lights can be a frequent part of life with these engines.

Car still running beautifully, so the light is the only thing slightly spoiling the fun :)
