1.9d gearbox issues

Featured Replies

So, have some issues with the gearbox.. 1sty, 3rd, and 5th go in perfectly fine (selector shaft being pulled) but 2nd 4th and reverse its like they didn't went in but they actually do and you have to make more force on the gear lever and hard to get them out.

now i tried changing gears with a screw driver from the gearbox side.. its easy to pull the selector rod out but harder to push it in.. i have a 1.3 gearbox and its very easy to push and pull the shaft!

could be a bent shaft? engine was on the floor...

could be the gear lever? anyone got this problem at some point?

clutch and oil few days old!

it could be bent or it could be that something has dropped thru the speedo drive hole (the plastic speedo drive is good for this!!) and is sat in the selector mech jamming it up.

is the selector locating pin still attached properly (on the bottom of the box going upwards and prob a hex type fitting) the other thing to do is remove the rev switch and try selecting gears with it out but dont drive it as the oil will fall out.

" is the selector locating pin still attached properly (on the bottom of the box going upwards and prob a hex type fitting)" can you please tell me more about this? What is it? Speedo drive is still there and didnt fell in.. i can select 2nd 4th and reverse but its a bit hard and they dont give you the feel that they where engaged.. but they do.

The selector locating pin is a spring-loaded pin which provides positive location of gears. As Jim says it's on the bottom of the box (19mm or 22mm head), and without it the box will not 'detent' into gear. It's possible (but unlikely IMO) that this is the problem.

I see... But its going into all gears!

That's why i said it's unlikely - it's a simple plunger affair and there's not much room for it to do something like that. I would have posted "bent selector shaft" the other night, but since the site upgrade I can't post replies half the time - it just hangs and doesn't get posted. If it happened when you've changed the clutch, it seems possible that it got bent during that? Certainly something changed as a result of the change, yes?

Well when i got the engine it was on the floor... So its very likely that was bent duri g transport or when it was removed back in the uk.... Il see if i can check some more stuf buts im thinking its a bent selector shaft..

You should be able to see - remove the concertina gaiter on the shaft where it goes into the box, and look at the shaft where it goes into the box as you change gear. It goes into a bushing which would be where it was binding, I'd imagine. Obviously given time that will wear and then leak as it's right at the bottom of the box, alas! There is a replaceable seal on there, which is easy enough to change, but take a look and see what gives...

So... I have to change the gbox as its fookd. Cant seem to find a diesel one... Would you guys think a 13 petrol gbox will do fine? We dont have highways etc over here... And mostly is city driving some straight roads doing 100km max! Would you think would be good? And for fuel consumption?? How will it effect it?

It will fit OK. The engine will rev more, so you will use more fuel, and it will probably seem quite "buzzy" as you drive it as the engine will be revving more than usual. You could always rebuild the box you have using the parts from the 1.3 - if you use the gears and diff then that will work, but you have to shim the input shaft and diff bearings properly or it'll die, so maybe just putting the 1.3 box in will be the best idea..

So gear changes will be longer right?

No, the ratios are the same, so the gear changes will happen at the same revs - i.e. if you change at 4k and it dropped to 2k then that would be the same. But the road speed will be different - the diesel box is much taller geared overall, so the road speed that any given combination of revs/gear you have at the moment will be less when you put the petrol box in. Hence the mpg going down.

I see... Then il see if i can fix the diesel box.. as all i want is good mpg!.. im 99% sure all it has is a bent selector so i thibk i can use the one from the 1.3.

Also is it normal to rattle a bit until the clutch is pressed? Was told its normal..

I'm not sure how much it will affect the MPG (although no doubt it can be calculated, I guess some research online is needed)... but they don't make it higher for no reason.

Rattle - would either be the clutch release bearing, or the gearbox. I've not got anything to compare to as the only Felicia I have is the rally car which has a S/C box which is noisy, but I can't say I noticed one on my Mum's or the recce car when I had them, so worth checking while you have it apart? THere should be NO discernable play in the input shaft when you try to move it along its axis - the spec is 0.01mm from memory, which you won't feel. If you can feel play in it, then the box needs a rebuild...

Release bearing is brand new! So i guess its the box. What is the input shaft? Gear selector shaft?

Just 'cos it's new doesn't mean it's OK....

Input shaft is the shaft on the gearbox through which the drive goes - the shaft that fits into the clutch.

rattle is most likely the nut on 5th gear wearing its way thru the end casing!! sort it before it takes the splines out on the shaft.

Yes your right, its not the first time. I found faulty brand new items... But another thing that makes me think its not the release bearing is that the rattle stops when 3/4 of the pedal is pressed... Usually if its a faulty bearing it stops rattleing almost immidiatly on e the pedal is being pressed.
