Rear number plate bulb

Featured Replies

Anyone know what size torx screwdriver I need to take off the rear number plate light cover?

I haven't got any torx heads so I need to buy one, so I can change bulb for sum LEDs.

Thanks

Mike

T15 is what you'll need.

A word of caution - even if you buy 'Canbus' 38mm LED's you may find you still get a 'Bulb Out' warning!

The fix is to wire in a pair of these: http://www.autoledshop.com/index1.php?cid=666

Marvelous advice - many thanks. I'll give it a go tomorrow.

Six pounds for a couple of resistors sounds awfully expensive ...

Hi I bought a T15 from the lovely Halfords today and it doesnt fit! Anyone know what is wrong? Does an allen key get the screw off or is it only a torx driver?

Thanks

Mike

? Just been and checked mine again - mine's definitely a T15, Jan 2011 build!

Merlinman thanks for checking

My Yeti is December 2011, it cant have changed can it?

The Torx screw driver I bought is quite long so doesnt fit directly under the screw, but at an angle.

Do you think this will make a difference? Sorry for my ignorance, I havent tried to screw one of these out before!

Hi I've just checked mine which is a Jan 2012 and the rear number plate light covers are a Torx 10. The Torx I used is from a free set given away by Halfords with Mobil ESP.

I would avoid led bulbs lot more hassle than they are worth!

Thanks Hood, I'll let the nice man at Halfords have a look tomorrow.

LED bulbs are the way 2 go, great light for small energy consumption.

great light for small energy consumption.

Unless you install resistors in parallel ;)

The LED bulbs I'm going to try used to be on my Merc.

They didn't bring up any faults on the dash.

Would love to change the bulbs for DRL to LEDs but I don't think there are any yet.

I know about the set that need to be wired in, but that's beyond my DIY capabilities!

Torx 10 it is on mine, thanks The Hood! Unfortunately the LED bulbs from my Merc throw up an error on the dash. So back to yellowish number plate lights. But when only one LED was installed there was no error - so I thought I was home and dry. it did look good though.

Funny they didnt do that on the Merc and that had the Canbus system too.

Back to the drawing board!

There's someting peculiar about the rear number plate bulbs on several current VAG models - even if you fit 'canbus' LED's they can still throw a bulb out warning. That's why I fitted those (pricey?) resistors which someone in the Octavia section pointed me to!

They work just fine.

Mystified about the Torx 10 or 15 fitting - perhaps a different supplier? As I said before mine are definitely 15!

Just thinking out loud,

With the low power draw of LED's I wonder what would happen if an LED was wired in, in addition to the original bulb rather than instead of it. Would the increased power draw be low enough to avoid an error? Perhaps the LED could be in series (or parallel can't remember which) using a second bulb holder.

Of course there would need to be somewhere safe to tuck the old functioning bulb where the heat would not be a problem and the bulb would be safe. There may be somewhere suitable, must have a look when (if) the rain stops when I am not at work. :sun:

Maybe the Plumber or Tech Yeti might know.

It will have to be in parallel, as if it was in series, when the filamant blew it would stop the LED as well.

For this (LED in paralel with the bulb) to work LED needs to have a resistor (in series). So basically - same thing. But with a bulb :giggle:

True, and as you already have the bulb think of the money saved.

Now where can the bulb be hidden?
