Intermittent dead Accelerator pedal!

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Something strange happened last night on my drive into town, for some reason it felt like the pd130 engine in my Fabia vRS spluttered/missed and the accelerator pedal stopped working completely and had no affect on the rev counter when pressed, the engine hadn't stalled and was slowing down naturally in gear, then after about 10 secs everything was back to normal. It then happened again about a minute later. I was in 4th and 5th gear accelerating on boost when this happened around 3-4k rpm, fuel was on the very start of the red and fuel light had not yet come on. Since then it hasn't happened and i've done another 30 miles. Engine management light is off and the car has done 67k miles with a fresh oil and oil filter change. On idle it doesn't miss a beat and athough i've had the car less than 2 weeks this is the first thing thats happened.

Has anybody else experienced the pedal going dead and what would most likely be the cause of the problem?

Thanks in advance!

Rhys

Sounds like you've gone into limp mode to protect the engine for some reason. This only reverts to normal engine performance after you switch the ignition off for a few seconds.

You need to check your engine for fault codes which could explain why you've had this problem.

Mr Rooney has it right.

Yes, but on a different vehicle so this might not be helpful if the fabia's system is different

It was on a ford, while driving at a steady speed on the motorway the pedal just went dead! the engine didnt stall or anything the revs just went down to idle speeds. I pulled over and pressed the pedal up and down a few times with nothing. But if i turned the engine off and back on it would reset the fault and the pedal would work fine! this happend about 5 times in a week.

The problem was the pedal itself, i took it off and took it apart, it reveals about 10 metal prong type things then move across a circuit board when you press the pedal, which tell the engine your throttle possition. With it apart i sprayed it will electrical cleaner and give it a whipe down, put it together and been fine ever since.

Sounds like a faulty pedal. You need to get it code read.

There is an article on this forum somewhere on how to go about taking the pedal apart and resetting it.

Thanks guys, definitely something to consider. There is also an issue with ignition whether these are related I'm not sure. Most times it fires up immediately but now and again it takes about 3 seconds to start. The battery isn't flat and it happens even after being driven for reasonable length of time, could this hint at fuel pump/injector problem? Like I said, the car had only done 69k miles (55 plate).

Just a final update, I took the car to a vw specialist where they did a diagnostic. There was only the one fault code on the car which referenced a faulty camshaft sensor which was causing the problem. Had this replaced at the same time as a cambelt kit change and it has been running sweet as a nut ever since (:
