Today I have test driven a 58 plate vRS and its being advertised as a “CR”. But I’m not convinced it’s a CR.

The handbook lists various spec of Octavia and towards the end details the PD – but no mention of CR.

The rev counter red lines at 4.5K – I believe a CR re lines at 5k?

If it helps, below is a picture of the engine bay.

So is this a PD or a CR?

Thank

Paul

That's a cr for sure, the dip stick on a pd goes through the plastic cover. So it's def a cr.

How was the power delivery cause if it didn't make u smile it's a cr lol :)

yeah looks like the cr the throttle body unit is on the rear on a pd and this is on the front

Yes, and the CR plastic engine cover has diagonal ridges.

PD initial surge then..... nothing.

CR more linear pull through the rev range.

On balance I would rather the CR, it sounds less like a tractor lol

Engine code with CEGA is CR but that's a CR engine cover.

I would say looking at it, that its a CR but redlining at 4.5k says to me PD unless the pre-fl's have a different redline?

PD initial surge then..... nothing.

nothing... change gear!

On a 58 I assume that this is pre-FL.

I wonder if the CR engined pre-FL vRS dash kept the same 4.5K red line and then when the FL came all with CR and the new dash/dials they then changed the red line to 5K?

Arghh, my pet hate, leaves in the scuttle tray :giggle:

Also I'd avoid this one as it's either running very hot or your camera phone is knackered! :D

Not my idea of fun having to change gear all the time to stay in the narrow power/torque range but each to their own. At least with the CR you could rev it a bit and get some reward.

A few extra changes for the PD punch is worth it for me.

I still start in 1st and end up in 6th so thats the same number of gear changes.

Maybe next time try the DSG and eliminate gear changing altogether?

How lucky was that, i was going to ask how to tell the difference between the pd and the cr. been getting some price for bits for the car and some are saying my 08 vrs is a pd and other are saying it's the first of the cr's cheers peeps. turns out mines is a cr after all the sales man was telling the truth when i bought the car.

Thanks for all the posts. So it looks like the car I'm considering is a CR afterall, albeit with a pre-facelft dash...

Don't mind gear changing I just don't want to be doing it so low down because it's run out of puff so early.

People talk about the PD Punch but I think it's deceptive. It makes you think it's quick. My Dad's got a Mk 4 2002 Golf TDi 130bhp (and I've driven a few others too) and it's got the PD Punch and it feels quick; quicker in some respects than my old Mk 4 2002 Golf V5 (which I bought when my Dad got his) but put them side by side and the V5 destroys it. The V5 had 40bhp more [although bit less torque i recall] so that's what you'd expect but the point is the TDi 130bhp could feel quicker, even though it wasn't.

There still both 170 bhp so both the same , I love the punch and I had the money for a cr but just didn't like it at all to drive, it was like driving a 2 liter petrol with no turbo, I'd say off the line a pd would have the edge.

Iv had lots of big hp cars so I like the feel of the pd.

If I ever buy a facelift I might put a pd in it lol ;)

You're right both 170bhp and 350Nm so more or less the same; the power is just delivered differently. Be interesting to see power/torque curves for both side by side. Not so sure the PD would necessarily have the edge as your PD punch could give you traction problems if you hoof it from a standing start.

Which is exactly what it is all about (at least for me).

I'm no racer so if my car is able to convince me its quick when in reality its a few tenths slower than another then I'm happy

Fair play, like I said each to their own. It would be dull if we all liked the same things.

Exactly, I'm used to the PD and have only driven a CR for a few miles but put me in a CR for a good few thousand miles and I could be talking a very different story!

You've owned both so have a much better idea then me

My advice is always the same, you really need to drive both in order to know which one you prefer as they are both very different to drive!

I never actually owned a PD only the TFSI, CR and TSI. I had an extended test drive of one for a day though courtesy of Silbury Skoda. Agree you need to drive both to see which you prefer although I never test drove a CR before ordering one!

Did u get a big pd punch so on ur extended test drive , it's prob similer lift in power to a tsi but not as much as the tsi.

PD initial surge then..... nothing.

CR more linear pull through the rev range.

+1????

+1????

Ok is that u agree or u want to ask a question lol

just to confirm this my old 58 plate pre FL did have a 4.5K red line and a CR engine. Think they changed it after a while but the early ones kept the 4.5k
