A rattle that is driving me nuts....

Featured Replies

I hope some one here can give me some advice.

I have a rattle at about 35mph mostly in warm weather. It seems to come from what I think is the central locking sensor ( it is located in the centre top of the dash, behind the 'pop' lid storage box- the one that annoying keeps on opening whenever you try to clean the windscreen interior!)

I have looked through the owners manual and in various places on this site but I cannot find any references to this item or how I could go about finding out how to fix it.

Here's hoping.....

Pop the top box out of the dash (easy to do - just insert something between the squashy dash and the hard plastic front lip of the box) and see if you can find anything rattling in there.

Just don't drive at 35mph. Simples.

I had same thing - got box out as described (thought it might be the hazard light switch or its wiring) but could not find anything. If I had to guess I'd say it was lower down inside that area, back of radio or maybe something to do with ventilation mechanism. Sometimes seems to stop by pressing on the edge of the radio panel, but not always.

It is an occasional rattle, and not loud, but a bit irritating. I don't feel it is worth digging around any further.

Thanks for the information, a job at the weekend I think. :)

I had a rattle while driving at 40mph , it disappeared as i got faster. After moving off from traffic lights it appeared again between 35 - 40 mph. I thought it was coming from around the area of the instrument binnacle or stereo. I pushed around the top of the dash and stereo but that didnt seem to work. The next day there was no rattle and a week later it still hasnt returned. The noise would do your head in.

It seems to vary sometimes according to what the ventilation/climatic settings are. E.g. turn down (or up) the temperature control and it stops after a short while. But there doesn't seem to be any exact situation that produces or stops the rattle (which is sometimes more of a buzz!)

Mine has a really irritating creak/rattle from the silver plastic gear lever surround and the little storage box in front of it. Drives me nuts!!!

I had a similar rattle from new and I found it to be the air duct that ran from side of dash where it feeds to the door for window vent to centre of dash where it starts. I popped off cover at end and put some more passing on it to make it push harder against the pipe did the trick then got main dealer to remove pipe and put some lagging around it to stop it for good been spot on since.

Is the end cover tricky to get off?

Are you sure your dash rattle is the dash or something in it? I had one thatwas driving me nuts and it turned out to be the auto-dimming rear view mirror, even though it sounded like ti was coming from the base of the windscreen...

I had exactly that in my Primera GT. Didn't work it out till I touched the mirror glass while the rattle was going on. Doesn't seem to be that in my present car though.

Easy as pie, there's a little slot in the bottom edge just the right size for the tip of a screwdriver :)

I had something similar (misdirected sound), turned out it was the sunglasses in the sunglasses box. :S

First thing I checked, AND took the rubber lining out, and held my finger against the (closed) lid ! No effect at all.

Just found one oddity - again related to interior mirror area. The grey plastic tube from the screen rain sensor up to the headlining is loose - it doesn't seem to attach to anything at the headlining end. Should it lock into something there, or is this how it is meant to be?

Seems like a possible source of rattle to me.

Anyway, for now I have cut a small block of soft foam rubber and squeezed it between the tube and the top inside surface of the screen.

Will check for rattle, or lack of, on a longish ride due tomorrow (Sunday).

There is a lip on the top of the tube so I tweaked the headlining out a bit and wedged the lip behind it.

Tried popping out the top box to check out behind it over the weekend, but it wasn't so simple! Managed to release one side but try as I might I could not seem to un latch the other.

The rattle is definately coming from the centre piece, giving it a slight push when its rattling stops it. Gonna have to get in there....will let you know the result.

Thanks for all the 'rattle' tips, I am sure this won't be the last one :o)
